College of William and Mary Class of 2025 — Regular Decision

Awe… A cypher box containing college swag deliverd by UPS. Boy does this school do it with taste. I love it.

My eyes filled with tears when it was opened because even though offers have now come in from higher ranked schools, I love my college, and it makes me so happy to see some of these students here really want to go there. I wish I could make a spot for every one of them.

V: hope we get ours today!
We are visiting next week to do a self tour. Any suggestions (we already have the cheese shop on the list!) for places we should be sure to check out/emphasize?

Well… you’ll see Colonial Williamsburg right next to the college, but if your time is limited resist the trap to go through every single thing there. You’ll have plenty of time for that later. Check out the Barnes and Noble, because you buy textbooks downstairs there. There are several cafes in walking distance that take the college meal plan card, so the students can eat and gather at various spots off campus too. You can check more of those.

What you really want to do is get a layout of WIlliamsburg: where the grocery shopping is, where Target and other stores that your student will need to go to are… It’s not a huge place, but it can be confusing until you get your bearings.

Another thing I can tell those considering attending and visiting. When I look on the VADH website to see how this region is doing on covid vaccinations, Williamsburg/James City County is leading the pack percentage-wise on this side of the water. They’re getting the population vaccinated if that’s a concern of yours, especially when considering whether classes will be in-person in the fall.

@VA4life
Are the swag boxes for admitted or committed students?

No, because my student is still getting decisions back and hasn’t decided yet.

I looked inside and it looked like a W&M banner, pom poms, stickers, car magnet, etc… There was a nice card on top of the items encouraging the family to visit for a self-guided tour since there are no official tours.

Hi! D21 has William & Mary in her final two choices. We walked through the campus & it was gorgeous, but wish we had someone to pepper with questions.

Does anyone know if W&M will be in person in the fall (vs virtual? Or hybrid?)

Any W&M students or alum here? Curious as to how tutoring works & do kids have to pay? (Like for chem tutoring)

Re: Housing, I see there are different rates. Can you opt for a certain level or do you just get what you get?

Thanks! Good luck to all with decisions.

Hi! I’d be happy to help, so pepper away. I’m a W&M alum, my D19 is a sophomore, and D21 has committed (she’s thrilled!).

D19 is on campus now, living in her sorority house and thriving. Classes are virtual, but she’s been working out at the rec center, and doing her job as a trip leader for the Tribe Adventure Program (no off-campus trips yet, but they are kayaking, training, holding campfires, and on the ROPES course). D also volunteers at the local animal shelter, and a horseback riding program for kids with disabilities. Last year, she was able to be active with the sailing team (no experience necessary), the Sunrise Movement, and the Meridian Coffee House.

I anticipate things being as close to pre-Covid as possible in Fall 2021. Most faculty and staff are already vaccinated, and many students. D19 is one week past her second shot right now. Here’s the official announcement:

We currently expect that improved public health conditions will allow W&M to resume in-person operations in the fall, with appropriate public health protocols. We will be communicating more details about how we anticipate returning to campus in the next few weeks.

My D21 has also been checking out tutoring options! When D19 has run into academic challenges, she’s gotten extra help from the professor and been fine. But D21 may need more regular support. Here is the information about the TutorZone in Swem library:
https://www.wm.edu/offices/deanofstudents/services/academicenrichment/tutors/index.php

Tutoring is free this semester due to Covid and the difficulties of hybrid/virtual classes. Normally, it is $12 for an hour, or $18 for an hour and a half, unless the student has financial need.

As for housing, I think all freshman are in standard double rooms, unless there is a need for a single for documented medical reasons. Standard doubles are $3,945.00 per semester. Upperclassman have more choice.

Just ask if you have more questions, and many congrats on your D21’s acceptances  !

We were there Monday and did the walking tour. It was a gorgeous day to walk that beautiful campus, but campus was completely dead. Not much sign of activity outside at all, no students or faculty available to ask questions, and people we did encounter just seemed unfriendly (I.e., when we were stopped trying to figure out the map no one stopped to see if we needed help.). I know things are so hard with Covid, but we had much more welcoming experiences on other campuses that only offered walking tours. I wish at least the Admissions Office was open. Our experience is no knock on the school, my daughter was thrilled with the acceptance, but so hard to get a “vibe “ under current conditions. My daughter’s top choice was elsewhere before the visit, so it’s all good. Just one more thing that stinks for current seniors making such a hard decision!

W&M gave the students Tuesday and Wednesday off as a mini-Spring Break. They were likely finishing off work on Monday so they could enjoy the break, or they had already headed to VA Beach, Richmond, or College Landing on the James River. Some who live in VA probably went home (not a regular thing, but more likely during Covid). My D19 and her boyfriend left Monday after classes to go to Shenandoah National Park and climb Old Rag Mountain.

Did you go to Merchant’s Square and walk down DOG street? Aroma’s? Always full of students and people on a nice day. Did you go to Lake Matoaka? There’s an outdoor amphitheater there, and usually paddling hours, yoga, a cappella practice, students hanging out . . .

If anyone else is headed to W&M, please let CC know. A lot of us could point you towards the places students go, and give you a heads up if they are on vacation!
