We really expected him to get in based on Niche and collegedata analysis. We figure that compared to others who were admitted, he was hurt by his lack of AP classes, being below the top 10% of his high school, and his mid-terms in which he had a D+ in Calc but As in everything else. He’s been accepted to American, McGill, JMU, and Mary Washigto

Was a bit surprised since I believed I was going to be waitlisted based on the Naviance from my school, as I was slightly below average.

My son isn’t going to be happy with me sharing but there’s something to be said about being proud of your accomplishment.

Came from one of the top charter schools in AZ, nationally ranked in the top 10 in US News and World Best High Schools

1520 SATs (took it once-he wanted to take it again but the counselors said no)
34 ACTs (took it once)
GPA - 4.8 (weighted)
National AP Scholar - took 12 APs (5s in APUSH, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Euro, Human Geography, Physics, English Lang and 4s in Spanish Lang, World History. Got a 3 in Bio when he took this AP in 9th grade and also took AP World in 8th grade and got a 3. We wish he was give the test in 10th or 11th grade. It was tough)
Asian male

His school also does not rank but he is within the top 10% of his class of 90 kids (yes-they are super competitive)
The usual Extra Curricular activities - National Honor, Red Cross, Quiz Bowl, Tough Mudder and also had a side tutoring business with 5 clients varying from 5th grade to 10th grade.

Columbia, Yale and Brown - rejected
UNC- rejected (I really couldn’t figure this out)
Carnegie Mellon, Case Western, U Mich - Waitlisted
Wisconsin - accepted with $5000 financial aid - I think they really want the state kids. They simply wanted money from me.
Michigan State - accepted into their Honors College and $30k in scholarship $$$ And accepted to W&M.

Luckily W&M was his first choice behind the Ivys so he ins planning to attend. Surprised that he was not offered the Monroe Scholar but he didn’t care back. Meant more to my wife and me than to him.

He lives in AZ so no on campus interviews.

I felt more rejected than he did, and with the recent college scandal, we were hoping the Ivys may want to recruit more from the middle class kids with great academics but Ivys play by their own rules so what can we do. I think they sometimes use a dartboard to select their kids. And I think they are overrated and overpriced. Especially for undergrad. Actually, he is pretty happy with attending W&M. Watched videos on YouTube and it looked like a fun place to be.

Go Tribe! and Go W&M Class of 2023! Good luck to you!

@rogerpark67 If he hits the GPA threshold he’ll be eligible for Monroe scholarship activities after freshman year and he should pursue that. So he wouldn’t live in the Monroe scholar freshman hall his first year, but he’ll be eligible for the independent study grants they get.

@VaParent19, good luck with waitlist and other great choices! It’s a tough environment, and I’d have been a little surprised too, but good news that W&M still possible, and other terrific acceptances. Students/alums obviously LOVE JMU, and for good reason. A friend’s kid recently graduated and has a job they love with as high of a salary in their field as anyone from any school.) We visited McGill with my oldest, and, wow, what a great place (though a little cold for me, to be honest). Other good choices too. Good luck!

Thanks shuffle1. That was my understanding as well. It appears there are other scholar program not as wide known as the Monroe Scholar, and I believe there is time to apply. Sorry, my son knows what it is, but I don’t. I’m not going to get too bent out of shape. I’m sure whatever he does, will be work out in the end. We are happy he is headed to W&M.
