College Olympians

Berkeley update:

California came away with three more medals Sunday on the ninth day of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Rowers Jake Wetzel and Erin Cafaro claimed gold medals in the men's eight for Canada and the women's eight for the United States, respectively, and Natalie Coughlin earned a silver medal with the U.S. 4x100-meter relay. Coughlin finished her second Olympics with six medals and now has 11 for medals for her career, one shy of tying the U.S. Olympic women's swimming record.

Cal has now won 13 Olympic medals in Beijing and would rank 12th in the overall medal standings between Ukraine (14 medals) and the Netherlands (10).

Natalie Coughlin's performance in the Olympics--6 medals, including one gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze---has been spectacular, but completely overshadowed by Michael Phelps.

I say first prize goes to Michigan which with 8 golds (all Phelps) would rank third after China and the US in that category.

Second prize goes to Berkeley with 13 medals overall, 6 of them belonging to Natlie Coughlin.

True, Phelps is a part-time student at Michigan, but then if I'm not mistaken Coughlin is an alum at Cal.

41 Trojans in Beijing, and over history USC has sent more athletes to the Olympics than any other university :: USC has won a gold medal at every Olympics since 1912.

All you other schools are just pretenders. Want to talk football and baseball too? Look into it before chirping ...

Michigan only has 26 Olympians this year, but, they have done well on the medal count.

At last count, they have won 9 Golds and 1 Bronze. Of course, 8 of those 9 Golds were won by Phelps, but let us not forget Peter Vanderkaay, who also won a Gold and a Bronze.

If Michigan were a country, it would be tied for 6th in the Gold Medals count, along with Russia and Japan!

USC is doing quite well also - 5 golds in swimming, plus another almost-sure gold in basketball, a guaranteed gold or silver in soccer, and a gold medal potential in track.

But that could be just the beginning. USA Women's water polo is in the gold-metal game, with (last I heard) as many as 6 USC players on that team

Gators hanging in there with 9 medals...2 golds (and 2 bronze) for Ryan Lochte, and 3 silvers for America's emotional favorite, 41 year old Dara Torres.

UCLA's 36 Olympic athletes earned 15 medals.

Ohio State checks in with 15 athletes (would have been 17 had the Hamm brothers not withdrew) representing 7 countries in 11 sports.

The medal haul was:

2 GOLD

USC Athletes Win 21 Medals At 2008 Beijing Olympics :: Included are 9 gold medals.
USC athletes of the present and past won 21 medals-9 golds, 10 silvers and 2 bronzes-at the just-concluded 2008 Beijing Olympics.

It was Troy's second highest overall medal count, behind only the 24 medals it won at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and equalled the university's second highest gold medal total, behind only the 10 golds it won at the 1948 London Games.

In fact, if USC athletes had competed as a country in 2008, they would have placed 13th in the overall medal standings in the Beijing Games (and tied for eighth in golds).
