College options for international student with a low TOEFL score

I am trying to figure out what my cousin should do next year. I have looked at most colleges and they will not take a student with a TOEFL score below an 80 (internet), 213 (computer) or 550 on the paper exam. My cousin got a 78 on the TOEFL and still does not have any plans for next fall. My family is leaning towards sending her to a community college to get her english skills sharpened up and then transferring schools. Does anybody have any options or suggestions what we should do? Her grades are excellent, she just needs work on her english.

There may not be enough time for her to apply to a community college if she is going to need an F-1 visa. For quicker turn-around, it may be better for her to arrange to study at one of the English language institutes like ELS. Often they are based on or near a college or university, and after a semester of intensive English students can arrange to take one or two regular classes while they apply for regular college admissions. Another option would be for her to study English in her home country while she makes her plans for next year. She might find it helpful to pay a visit to the closest office of [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://educationusa.state.gov/) The counselors there have a lot of experience advising students just like her.

Good luck!

check if he would qualify for ave maria university

Do a google search on Colleges or Universities that will “take students with lower toefl scores” for ideas. Miami of Ohio is a very good school is willing to accept students with lower TOEFL scores than other similar caliber schools.
A 72 makes the cut for toefl. If she has good grades, with her toefl score, I believe her chances for admission are very good.

The Miami campus is beautiful.

If she does not mind cold weather, she could go to Bemidji State University in Minnesota. This small state college is trying to get more out of state and international students to enrich its student body so it charges the same very low tuition for international students as it does for in-state students and has a low threshold for TOEFL scores for entrance. Bemidji would be a safety school for her.

I believe Slippery Rock would be a safety as well (in Pennsylvania). It would be more expensive than Bemidji State but the weather would be warmer!

An idea for next spring.
I believe it is too late now to apply to the schools I listed above for next fall. The College of St. Catherine in St Paul, MN, has room for next year, and she could apply by October 15 and be admitted for spring semester. St Paul is not nearly as cold as Bemidji. St. Kate’s is a women’s college with a lovely campus in a nice residential neighborhood with some shops and restaurants. There is easy access to downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul, if she wants to be near a city. Students can also take classes at St. Thomas, Macalester, Hamline or Augsburg, and bus service runs between the campuses, which are all within a few miles of each other.

This is a very nice college and they are generous about admitting students with lower TOEFL scores. If she would consider a women’s college, this might be a perfect choice.
