College options

Hello! I am currently in alil bit of a confusing state at the moment. I have been accepted to both Marymount Manhattan College as a BFA acting major and City College of New York (CUNY) under the arts and humanities (Intending to major in theatre arts as well). I want to not only go into acting but also entertainment management and technical production as well . Both schools look promising at the same time have their own horror stories but I am just not sure which would be best for me. if any representative could give me some information that would be awesome.

Horror stories!? Care to share more?

for MMC i just heard that people are very pretentious there and very clique-ish and as for City college is mostly just CUNY’s disorganized system

Don’t listen to the MMC stories. We know a lot of people who have attended Marymount Manhattan and have loved their programs. That being said, since the majority of the school are performance majors, it might be easy to feel left out if you are not involved in theatre or dance. The student body is very diverse and some of the nicest people we met at any of the open houses or auditions. A lot of these stories are started by people who didn’t pass auditions. We are attending an accepted students day on April 23rd. You should attend and you can decide for yourself! Good luck!

Agree with @samigaga. My D has a number of friends at MMC (freshmen and sophomore Acting majors). None of them report horror stories and I don’t consider the group of kids we know to be clique-ish or pretentious. Both my S and D tend to socialize outside of class with the students in their major; their schedules are crazy and they do not really get to know too many people outside of the acting/MT tracks.

Is cost a factor? CUNY is usually cheaper. I do hear bureaucratic horror stories regarding CUNY; however at the same time, if you want to go into management and tech as well as acting, it may be better to go that route as it may have more opportunities. I personally have heard of a few unfortunate stories about Marymount, but I’ve also heard really good stories; every program has stories.

@faradnin, the best way you can determine if you fit in with the feel of the program is by visiting and staying there. Only you can determine how pretentious or cliquish the program feels to you–that’s so subjective. What one student finds awesome, another student can despise. I’d encourage you to visit both schools–go to classes, stay all day, eat lunch there, talk to students, and if possible, visit overnight at a dorm. Good luck.
