College or SFS

Honestly, I'm kind of split between whether I should apply to the college or SFS. On one hand, I'm more interested in the opportunities presented by SFS. On the other hand, my background in foreign language is very weak. I will be taking my third year of Spanish during senior year. So far, I've managed to get through Spanish 1 and 2 with low A's. But there is no possibility that I could take a SAT2 in Spanish or anything. (My family isn't bilingual either.) I am planning on learning Russian while in college, and possibly some other language as well. Do you think that my weakness in language would hurt my chances at SFS?

I've got all the basic requirements to get into Georgetown, it's just getting into SFS that worries me. And one of the several majors which I am interested in is in the college. SFS is just more of my niche. Oh, I'm going to be applying EA to Georgetown no matter what.

what extra-curricular activities are you involved in? the most important thing you will need to convey on your application, through your essays and resume, is that you have a unique international interest. I wouldn't recommend writing an essay about Darfur, AIDS in africa, or anything relatively over-discussed like that, for fear that it wouldn't be interesting and unique enough to set you apart. the language thing shouldnt be a huge issue. I know people who got into SFS this year who have never taken a modern language. Georgetown has excellent languages, and it is not a problem in their minds if you start from the beginning of any language.

I strongly, strongly considered SFS, but I ultimately chose the college because I wanted more flexibility in my schedule. SFS is amazing if you have very focused interests...but keep in mind that the core curriculum for the first two years is intense and will not give you much room to do anything else. Also, SFS and the college give AP credit for different things, and the college will end up giving me a lot more credit in the end so that will be helpful in the long run since I am planning on a double major and a full year abroad

I'm a homeschooler, so my extra-curriculars aren't as stellar or normal as they could be. I've been extremely dedicated to a sport for as long as I can remember and I have awards and recognition to show for it. Also, I have a part time job teaching my sport. This summer and fall, I am going to volunteering to help Democratic party. So, my extra-curricular activities aren't perfect, but my academic record is quite good. And I like to think that colleges don't just admit the superhuman applicants.

Thanks for all the information about the differences between the college and SFS. If you don't mind me asking, what are the subjects you are planning on double-majoring in? I'm just curious to see what someone thinks about the school, especially someone who was debating between the two parts of Georgetown.

im planning on doing Economics and Chinese, possibly with a minor in french. my curriculum probably won't be too far off from SFS in the end, but I will have the liberty to do other things as well

okay, that's very interesting. thanks for the info!
