College Park Scholars

First off, congrats to everyone accepted!!!

I found this facebook page to post questions directly to the school about the scholars program in case anyone is interested:

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ask-College-Park-Scholars-For-Prospective-Students/194534840566371%5B/url%5D">https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ask-College-Park-Scholars-For-Prospective-Students/194534840566371</a></p>

Is anyone can answer my question?:

How are students supposed to handle scholars? I got in and I was checking most programs require an extra 16-20 credits. First Semester has 2-3 classes for some programs. That is an extra 7-8 credits on top of your major. I am an engineering student, already going to be taking 17 credits a semester; would it be a bad idea to do Scholars? Will my GPA be at risk??

If you look at the “supporting courses” required, other than the 1-hr seminars, the courses listed that you take will also fill your CORE requirements that you’ll need to do anyway, in addition to your major. Also, the website notes that AP credits will fulfill the supporting courses as well, if applicable. As an engineering student, you’ll still need to fulfill required courses in history, diversity, etc. as part of your 17 credits a semester, for the first couple of years. You do need to complete an internship by the end of your sophomore year. Depending on where you do this (on- campus vs. in D.C. or environs, for example) this may take some planning to do, but otherwise the scholars program is not a big time-commitment that will preclude you still being able to graduate on time.
