So that's less than 1,080 people total. Wow!

3.5 uw, 4.4 w
2270, 1530
780 us, 740 phys, 690 iic

It says I was admitted to Civicus. Is that a part of Scholars or Honors or what? I live in Nevada and have no idea what any of this means.

i was admitted to college park scholars!
3.74 unweighted (i dont really know how umd weights, but i heard they give u credit for honors classes)
2030 SAT
a few very solid, very time consuming extra-currics

Like what xbeautiful_day asked, I'd also like to know the difference between Scholars and Honors. The general consensus on this board seems to be that Honors people typically have higher stats than those in Scholars, but at times it also seems kind of random as this thread has shown that people with fairly high stats were invited to Scholars. How do they determine which program is right for you? Does the school you applied to or your intended major have anything to do with it?

I was admitted to College park Scholars also.
Here are my stats:
1980 SAT (670 Verbal, 660 Writing, 650 Math)
3.7 Unweighted at public school in NJ
Fairly good ec's, lots of volunteer time
No SAT IIs

I'm pretty sure I'm going to UMD, so more info would be appreciated, especially on this program. I was thinking about the one on Media, or American Culture, or Arts. Also, some info on the social life would be helpful (i.e. does Scholars really hurt or help your college experience socially.) I was looking forward to partying fairly heavily in college. What is the workload like?

Hopefully we can get some people on here that know something about this program because none of us seem to know much about it.

i'm sure all of us will be getting the packet in the mail today. I just got mine

I just got mine a couple minutes ago...

Im torn between "Life Sciences" and "Science, Discovery & the Universe." Which one do you think is closest to chemistry?

Probably life sciences. shrug I really have no idea though. Check their websites.

I'm probably gonna go for Media Self and Society. What's the best for psychology majors??

I'm going for the Media one. My second choice will probably be American Cultures, and I'm not sure about the third one. Maybe Earth, Life, and Time or International Studies.

How long are you guys making your essay? I was thinking about around a page doubled spaced.

ah, i didn't get my packet yet.

i didn't get mine either...im so anxious!

there really is nothing in there but one sheet of paper that is really neccessary.

I'm torn between international relations and public leadership. hmmm

p.s. Anyone else overnighting next week?

Hey I was accepted into the Scholars Program as well! I wasn't really considering Maryland until I researched the program and all of its opportunities. It sounds great! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows if this program is considered prestigious at all. I was also accepted into Wisconsin and I'm trying to decide if I'll receive a better education there or with the Scholars Program at Maryland. Also, if I do end up going to Maryland, should I stay in the living community or in just a regular dorm? I'm also wondering about how living in the Scholars community will impact your social life. So if anyone has any answers, that would be great! Thanks!

well what are you majoring in and where do you live now??

See Wisconsin isn't to tough of a school to get into but it is great. at maryland all of the Scholar students live in the Cambridge community. I think there are 5 building in a square. You will live in your building depending on which scholars program you are in. Socially I guess the best benefit is that you will be with people who are in your program(about 160 total) and I am sure that must become a nice tight group. I would stay in the Cambridge community because you meet people with your interests and you can always move somewhere else after the first year. Some kids in scholars I am told get free room and board sometimes(could be entirely untrue. It came from my aunt her son, my cousin, is in a scholar program)

I have an ex boyfriend who is in the honors program and said that the honors kids living together is something of a social drawback. While its nice to have students living with you in your classes, most kids in these programs (scholars, honors) arent the biggest partiers. Just a thought...

then again, I guess it depends on how you define "social." I agree with Cheap- I bet everyone gets very close.

Hi! Thanks for replying! Anyway, I'm from Chicago and I want to study international relations. I know the international studies program sounds perfect for my major, and dc is only a few minutes away from the campus, which makes the school even more appealing. But would it look better if i went to maryland as a scholar or wiscon? Thats my only issue...

then again, I guess it depends on how you define "social." I agree with Cheap- I bet everyone gets very close.

I agree 100%. I really really don't want to live in those dorms. The thing is the scholars at Maryland don't have absolute geniouses in it. I mean they are what you find-grade wise- at maybe a wisconsin, NYU, BC, or maybe even a Illinois. Some are smarter and some are less smart. I don't hold a stick to my friend who is in scholars. He has a 4.7 and a 32 ACT but is in scholars not honors. He has enough ECs to look average including an internship he has been at for about 9 months working both paid and unpaid during that time. I have a 3.96 or something like that at the same school with a 1380. Sometimes it is just luck but I don't think the people in the scholar dorms will be boring people.
I have however heard some bad things about the honors dorm with people being uptight but I don't really know so i won't say much. At penn state I got into this 4 year business program that is more competative than the one at maryland and they don't have to live in the freshmen dorms but I know i will chose to live in the freshmen dorm if I go.

That is the big thing about scholars though- it is a 2 year program. The kids are all going to be freshmen and sophmores. It isn't like the honors college. I again say I really don't know and that is why I want to spend a night but it seems like that won't be happening.....

ANY KIDS IN SCHOLARS NOW THAT CAN SHED SOME LIGHT?

What exactly are you going to say in your essay for the Interest Inventory?
