I am currently a junior in high school and am planning on majoring in music ed with piano as my main instrument. I was wondering if the repertoire I have selected to play is okay and if not do you have any suggestions?

Bach- Prelude and Fugue in D Major, BWV 874
Mozart- Piano Sonata No. 3 in B-flat Major, KV 281 (complete)
Schubert- Impromptu Op. 90 No. 3
Samuel Barber- Excursions Op. 20 No. 1

Thanks!

Don’t the school websites provide suggestions for audition material? Could you email their music departments and ask?

MusicfortheSoul,

Audition requirements vary from school to school. You will need to come up with a list of schools to which you want to apply and then research each of them to determine whether the set of pieces you listed will satisfy those requirements. Most schools have this information on their websites. Some schools can be fairly flexible about substitutions for the listed repertoire and some are fairly rigid about wanting only what they request. If in doubt, call the school and ask. Also realize that many music ed programs require an interview in addition to the audition. Good luck.

Good for you! So glad to find another pianist going into music ed. I’m beginning my music education studies at TCU as a piano concentration as well. Your program looks varied and diverse, which is promising. Remember you want to show the committee how multi-faceted you are as a musician, so go for diversity of tempo, technique, and mood. Also, just know that even though you are “only” a music education major and, at least on paper, not expected to play quite at the level of a piano performance major, you’re audition actually needs to be on par with that of a performance major for a chance to be in a top studio. Most university music schools don’t play the “major numbers” game; they will admit the best pianist, regardless of their major. I’m not trying to shake your confidence: I just want to warn you for the competitiveness of these programs. Best wishes!

Finally some more music ed people who play piano! where are you applying and does this school require memorization??

Those pieces sound just fine. You’ve got Bach, Mozart, but I suggest some Beethoven or Chopin!
