TASP is really, really great, but to an extent, very overrated.

Basically, it was about 1100 applicants this year and 130 something are finalists. Anyone who starts the application is an applicant, so those who do not finish the application are automatically off potential finalist list. I think this year alone that number was around 600 (including myself LOL). In the end, they pick 64 for this year, but that can vary depending on the number of programs offered).

For men, it’s not as difficult to get into as mainly females apply. One year, there was a program at Cornell with 16 girls and no guys. It can get extremely selective for women. For the 1 guy out of 15 girls (if that ever happened), that must have been one fun summer. haha.

Either way, it’s still an extremely prestigious program. Still selective for guys (don’t overlook what I said), but more difficult for girls.

Source: My girlfriend’s interviewer 2.5 weeks ago

Idk, part of me wants my girlfriend to get in, but at the same time, I hope she doesn’t because I can’t bear to have her gone for 6 weeks. This summer’s going to be tough as #*!$%. =/

Either way, I’m getting an internship lined up with an investment banker :D.

@sue
yeah, I didn’t even ask my friends to feedback my essay because there were some pretty personal stuff haha. Somehow the fact that I’m anonymous in CC allows me to be a bit more…free I guess? Since I don’t have to think about what other people think of me (haha, I’m one of those sad people who claim other people’s opinions don’t matter when they do)

Urm, so can we make a list of people willing to do this so we can add as friends??

Nah think HYPS are so overrated. But everyone does want to attend.

Either way, I’m compromising because I procrastinated and didn’t finish the application D:

My girlfriend said her interviewer told her that Telluride read about 500-550’ish complete applications if I’m not mistaken.

And yes, I wish I was the one guy with 15 other women. That actually sounds like 6 weeks of a lot of fun. So good for you! (This only adds to the regret I have about not finishing that insanely long app.)

Either way, being a finalist alone I’m pretty sure is a major hook on college apps, so good job! :D

Congratulations! Based on your outstanding application for the QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship, you have been selected to receive an invitation to a QuestBridge College Admissions Conference. We have also nominated you to be considered for an all-expense-paid campus visit.

This is awesome! I didn’t expect an award at all!
If anyone wants to read my essay, message me and I’ll share my PERSONAL statement which actually isn’t all that personal xD

Basically, I know a few people working in the town council through a selective leadership program that they sponsor. I got some contacts off a few members of the board who gave me some prominent lawyers and businessmen involved in the town’s affairs who’d be happy to help me intern.

I contacted one about a week ago who works on the Street and graduated from Wharton. He said he’d be glad to do an informal internship.

I’ve won a lot of things in business/econ/marketing, so that was a hook. For example, won states twice in DECA in finance, National Economics Challenge finalist for North Carolina, self studying AP Econ, etc.

Just show genuine interest and contact local (or regional people) in the field you want to pursue. You’d be surprised how much some people are willing to help!

I would not have known about all the summer programs without surfing CC. The only program I knew about when I entered high school was Cosmos. After getting acquainted with CC, I found myself applying to more and more summer programs each year. For example, freshman year i only applied to COSMOS. Soph year I applied to 6, and this year I applied to 9.

So although CC is addictive and there are a lot of ■■■■■■ and conceited people there, it is quite a resourceful website. =)

Going to Oxford! I bought my plane ticket tonight and booked accommodation on campus!! Yahoo!!

I got the good news: Fein Fellow (Quest for Excellence)
Got a laptop, Questbridge admissions counseling, visit nomination, and going to Stanford.

Wow Butters those are amazing scholarships ou’re getting from QB. Most people only get the conference. very few get any one of the other scholarships yet you got both, the counseling and the quest for excellence. Amazing. =)

Anyhow how come the only Quest for Excellence scholarship people have heard of are the Fein Fellows? What about Women, Technology, Scientist, etc?

Thanks!!! I was kind of surprised too because my stats were good but not like Bellys. 227 PSAT and 33 ACT. But I have given lectures at Harvard, no joke, and presentations to the Department of Energy. Science research is where I excel, so I thought I would put the word out to Oxford last week and they said yes!! Going June 30th and return September 4th. They needed my help for a research project so I will collaborate (do a little sightseeing, pubs, football). Harvard is the goal, but they’ve already let me present to their students so I have high hopes. (6.2% admission rate, uggh).

As for the other Quest for Excellence awards, they only give out one bay area award, one pre med, one Appalachian , etc. Maybe those individuals haven’t posted or thought to check on the forum?

@orangefoot: I wish I had known about this site (CC) a couple of years ago. I had no idea that you could take the PSAT multiple times, I have never heard of most of the summer programs or scholarship programs etc.

The only thing my GC did for me is sell my name to scammers so that I might become a member of “National Association of High School Scholars” (or some such), not to mention a whole host of dumb “Leadership Academies” (where for ten easy payments…)

I am going to do my best to get to the Yale conference! (But we will need some financial assistance)

Wow, when I read about people like Butters I worry that I’m not doing enough with my life. I just wish I had more opportunities here! Congratulations to everyone on your achievements :)

@drumwriter22 You have to have major confidence or be willing to better yourself to be a part of CC because once you think you’re doing enough, someone else comes and outshines you times a million.

I choose to be happy for other people and remember there are only 24 hours in a day for me, lol.

@Butters1: QuestBridge has written on their website that: “Quest for Excellence Award recipients will be notified in the spring of 2011.” They’re being extremely vague about it, and no, no one’s been notified yet.

I’m assuming they’ll do the same thing this time, which is to notify everyone of their award status.

Drumwriter22: grammargirl’s right, there’s no need to get your hopes down. You’ve been recognized for having something, and this something is quite something. There was a less than <30% acceptance rate for the conferences, and looking nationwide, that’s commendable.

Of course, Butters1 is one of those amazing people who kind of do everything, and one of those people I’d love to meet just so I can learn more from him/her and grow substantially, but again, grammargirl’s right: there are only 24 hours in the day.

Be satisfied with what you’ll do, because it’ll get you far. And look to people like Butters to learn from them, not to be jealous of or worried by them.

And congrats, butters1, on the counseling! As a fellow scientist-to-be, I applaud your achievements. :)

I know it’s a little soon to start this conversation but of those going to the Yale conference, would anyone be willing to meet me in NYC or have company overnight? I’m planning to fly to New York then take the train to New Haven but that will kind of exhaust my resources as far as money goes and I can’t apply for a travel grant since I’m going alone. Anyone in a similar situation? Maybe we could meet up…not to sound like a creeper or anything, lol.
