College Prep 2011!

I would love to meet all of you guys! I will be at the Stanford conference.

I just started research at a young age and met with a lot of contacts. I was in the lab everyday for 3 hours a day reading books and memorizing lab processes. This took a YEAR before I started my own 270 study. The results led to a lecture at Harvard, and now I will be training students at Oxford. Everyone on here is amazing, and it shows. The best colleges are making a huge push for low income students, and by participating to get this award, it means you are the best in this group. I have no doubt you will go where you want to.

Hopefully I will see everyone of you there. You don’t need to be more like me. You just need to do the best you can at whatever it is you want to do. It will show effort and perseverance and focus. Get in contact with a few professors. Visit them, and talk for a little.

I’ll be going to the Yale conference but I’ll definitely need a travel grant since I’ll be coming from Florida. But I haven’t figured out the travel arrangements yet although I’ll probably be traveling alone:/

Very wise advice, queensny!

I only live about an hour from Yale so getting there shouldn’t be a problem. Hopefully gas prices will be down a bit in June, though.

I have another question: Why do you think they asked us on section about the College Match if we’d be interested in certain schools? Not the part where we had to rank how interested we are in partner schools, but where it listed Carleton, Harvard, Duke, Georgetown… do you think they might be partner schools soon?

I’m going to the Yale Conference and was nominated for the college visits. So we don’t know if or when they tell us about Quest for Excellence? Though Butters was told, so wouldn’t you think the others would be told too?

@lizziedoll456 I was notified that I am a Fein Fellow. They may have told everyone about the Quest for Excellence but may not have. For a lot of the awards there is only one recipient and that one person may not post on here.

Eek. Looking at everyone’s stats and EC’s, especially Belly’s, I feel kinda bad about my own :(

For those of you traveling alone, are you not staying overnight anywhere? I was planning on getting a hotel room, but I was informed that you must be 21 to check-in to a hotel.

I’m going to the Yale conference, by the way.

@Azyrk13 I’d need to stay somewhere overnight. Basically the deciding factor of whether or not I’ll be traveling alone is if I get the grant. But if I don’t, that may create a problem as I’ll have nowhere to stay…

It sucks since traveling alone is SO much cheaper. Plane tickets are so much…even in two months advance. My plane tickets cost like 400 bucks each. Ridiculous. Hotel is reasonably priced, though. I should really book that now…

@Azyrk
I’m in the same boat-thinking of doing Amtrack there to NYC/Penn, and it would appear to only be 1 and 1/2hour to New Haven from NYC…but I will need two nights lodging, perhaps a bunch of us can split costs and bunk together? Azyrk, how far away are you? I am 6 hours from NYC, but it will be 8 hours by train.

Azyrk: which hotel did you find that was reasonable? Also, be careful, as New Haven is a bit dicey I understand.

I’m pretty down for sharing costs. As long as no one rapes/kills me.
But I’m from Illinois, so a good distance away. I’m flying from Chicago to New Haven.
But, the problem still stands: Someone 21 needs to rent the room, and be present at Check-in. I don’t understand why, but whatever.

almost missed this chance because I sent my application in at exactly 11:59 PST…

Stanford Conference and college visit nomination.
train ride from San Diego to Palo Alto? stoked.

On Monday, I am going to see what I can find out about lodging-perhaps on campus if there is some sort of guest lodging arrangement. I thought about flying, but getting to New Haven from JFK looks complicated. (JFK to Jamaca station, and then to Penn station and then to LIRR) It appears to be easier to go straight to Penn on Amtrak. It is possible that once we send in our RSVPs we will get a more complete information packet detailing lodging options.

Not that I’m going (mainly because I’m too cheap and the conference is only for a day), couldn’t you just take the train straight into New Haven?

Wow, the hotel issue kinda sucks.

I need to fly up from FL to Yale but I’m definitely not 21 and therefore cannot get a hotel room. There must be something that Questbridge is doing for kids that are traveling alone, they wouldn’t make it so that we have to be accompanied by an adult.

lol, why are yall keep mentioning my stats? I think it was regular/ normal at best. It’s just that because my situation is kind of unique… anyway, i didn’t get any scholarships.
Ya’ll may have mistaken me with tennisplayer then? Or is that sarcasm that i read? lol

For those looking for places to stay, did you guys try Hostel International? It’s a pretty reliable network of Hostels so you know you’re safe. It’s also geared towards youth traveling. I’m not sure if you have to have someone over 21 check in though…

UGH I really want to go, but I’m from Seattle, and the plane/hotel costs are too high. :frowning:
I would be going with my sister, and we’re looking for a hotel that would accept minors.

To those who are going to the stanford conference, are you guys traveling alone? which hotel are you guys planning to stay?

Hi y’all! I’m a new member here and this is my first post.
So I’m going to the Stanford conference, hope to see you guys there! The plane ticket is so expensive (~$500) but I don’t think I’m applying for the travel grant because if so, my dad has to go with me too - which means we will have to buy one more ticket. What is the point then? I’ll have to fundraise for my trip.

Anyway, do y’all know any current student at Stanford? My friend is a sophomore there and I’ll stay with her at her dorm.

Once again, can’t wait to see y’all at Stanford next month!
