S1 is getting postcards from various colleges touting "Science Preview Day" and the like. He's a junior. Would you say it's worth going to as a junior, or should he wait until his senior year? This particular one is on a Saturday, so while he'd meet profs, it's not like he'll get to sit in on classes. This particular college, one we visited this summer when the campus was dead, is about a five-hour drive away.

It depends. If your S is really into a school, and it's not too much trouble or expense to go visit, I would think that junior year would be a better time to do visit, as opposed to Senior Year when he'll already be busy with filling out applications and, possibly, going on admissions interviews. However, since you were at this specific school so recently, though, it may not be worthwhile.

I think it would depend on how interested your son is in this particular school. If it's a highly selective one, having attended the Science Preview days might help a tiny bit and be something to mention in an interview or in a "Why this school" question on an app. For me, it would depend on what else is going on in his life at the moment, and how much he wants to attend.

Hadn't thought of the essay edge. This is a school he's definitely interested in -- one of his top three. The ad rep is coming to his school in a couple of weeks, so maybe he'll ask him how helpful it would be.

Youdon'tsay- my D also a Jr has one school nearby which has preview days, both science and more general. We wanted to visit this school anyway, so think that visiting on this day would give us more than the standard info session/tour. She signed up for the first of two of these days but then found out she will have a sports commitment that weekend so we will try to make the second one in Nov. Will report back afterwards on how worthwhile it was.
