hey I have a question for anyone who has anything to say on the matter…
I got into BU and it is definatly one of my top schools
but I applied to the CAS and I am now realizing that I want to go to the business school
my question is: are the first year programs of the CAS ( economics major) and the business school similar enough that I could get all of my liberal arts classes out of the way my freshman year and then apply for a transfer for my sophmore year, or should I go to a less competitive college where I am in the business program right away?
any help would be much appreciated!!

Many people transfer into SMG at the beginning of sophmore year. You can certainly get some of your general requirements out of the way while you are in CAS. These courses include both micro and macro econ, any math course, both levels of writing, a philosophy course, a social sciences course, etc. As you can see, SMG students take quite a few general CAS courses so you can certainly knock some of these off. Keep in mind, if you want to transfer into SMG from another school, you will need to take the intensive 6 credit course, SM299. This course introduces you to essentially all areas of business and requires alot of work and dedication. If nothing else, it will give you a taste of what SMG is like and how rigorous it is. The only downside is, you must earn a B or higher to be allowed into the SMG program. So, if you are a hard-worker who really wants to succeed in the SMG program, definitely take those CAS courses and work your tail off in 299.

yeah that's pretty much what I was gonna say..only problem would be 299 which I heard is difficult.

I thought that SM 299 is a prerequisite class that everyone graduating from SMG had to take as well...

Also, does anyone know if SM 323 is one semester or a full year?

Dang SMG sounds daunting. Good luck OP!

If you start in SMG then you take 121/122 which is one year. If you transfer in to SMG you take 299 which is the SAME course, but in one semester (they cram it a bit and cut out unecesary things). SM323 is one semester (it's the only course you take that semester) and it is hard, I'n not going to lie, it's difficult. But you get through it and it's a very valuable experience. I would love to talk more about the Cross Functional Core if you would like to hear.

And no one has mentioned yet that you could transfer NOW. BU allows that and I know plenty of people that have. Call the admissions office and maybe you could get it approved before orientation.

So you think my best bet is to go to BU?
About a transfer now, I sent an email to BU Admissions and they said that the business school is already full, and I couple apply for a transfer for my sophomore year.
Thanks for all of your posts!

yay!
i just got another email from BU saying they were in fact able to transfer me over to the business school
that certainly makes my decision easier!

Oh good! Congrats!

nice I'm pleasantly surprised that worked out so easily for you. although I had a somewhat similar situation work out in my favor as well when I was applying to BU

Oh awesome, man. You avoided 299!! You just made your life alot easier. That is until you get to CORE (evil laugh). Haha, I'm just kidding. You will love SMG. I minor in it but def wish I could have majored. It is very demanding time-wise and sometimes you will feel like you live in the SMG building, but it is very rewarding.

SM 121/122 is hard enough, believe me..in some aspects it is harder than SM 299
