College Questions

Does anyone know of an undergrad rankings list of journalism? I am interested in an undergrad rankings, not graduate rankings. Also, what other academic areas would be beneficial to pursue along with a journalism major? Thanks.

There is no shortage of people who recommend that someone who wants to go into journalism should major in something like English, history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, or political science instead of journalism. Indeed, while the most elite colleges in the country produce many of the top-notch journalists, relatively few of these colleges have actual journalism majors.

The way I see it, while any major can produce an outstanding journalist, majoring in Journalism can give you a leg up because you will have access to Journalism internships. In fact, many J-schools require their students to complete internships. You will also minor or concentrate in another area. What interests you? English, history, political science, healthcare, etc.?

According to Google Answers, here are the top undergrad journalism schools:

Northwestern, U of Missouri - Columbia, U of Ga, Ohio U, Arizona State, UNC - Chapel Hill, Syracuse, U of Maryland - College Park, U of Kansas, Indiana U - Bloomington, U of Florida, U of Wisconsin - Madison, U of Texas - Austin.
