What about teachers who don't/can't get the forms? My d's favorite teacher is leaving her school (and the state). He's already written the letter - does she have to contact him to fill out the specific forms once she's decided where she's applying? Or is sending in the letter sufficient?

I might have the GC explain that somewhere or something

I never saw two of my recs, although my one teacher always gives her letters to the students so they can proofread them for errors. Basically my GC knew which letters best suited which school.

averageazn and Chedva, in the appication forms, there are specific teacher recommendation forms. Letter is a part of the form but the teacher still has to fill out a scoring chart(?) thing that ranks you on factors like leadership, academic curiosity, helpfulness, etc. So you would have to give your teachers or GC the specific forms.

On the common app, a lot of the school infos say they require 1 or 2 recs but they dont specify what subjects... does that mean we can send them like a math and science teacher only... or do we have to look on the schools website and see what theyre requirements are for regular applications. Also, for additional recs from like a employer or something can we just have the write a letter... no forms or anything?

to answer the OP's question:

NO there is no disadvantage to sending more than the required amount of letters of recommendations... as long as they are not repetitive, and as long as they are ENTHUSIASTIC recommendations. I think I sent in 6 total for harvard, got waitlisted, and sent in 3 more, and i think all nine of my letters (all extremely enthusiastic), helped me suade the adcommittee, but i can never know for sure.

NINE!? That is totally excessive and any college would be sick of you at that point. Whether you got in or not, by the 5th one or so I'm sure they weren't even reading them. Did you really have 9 distinct things you needed said about you? That is just ridiculous, and I wouldn't expect any adcom to think differently.

nine to one school, because of the application phases. i sent 6 to every school, but after my deferral, i sent in 3 more to my EA school, and a few others. Yes, I've done a lot of different activities, and developed really positive relationships. Apparently most of the colleges agreed, 8/11 said yes, the other 3 waitlisted me. umm. so :-D
