Asian, well-off, want to major in Economics or Engineering.
Senior now

Rank: 26/145 GPA: 94.3 Weighted
Brought my GPA up from 92.9 in 10th, to 94.3 in 11th! Huge improvement. Taking 3 AP Classes, 1 Honors, 1 Dual Enrollment (Adv. Art), in Senior year

EC:
-Debate 10-12. My team was undefeated in 2009 (8-0). My school won championship that year; earned 2nd place in 2010
-Work 9-12. 21hrs/wk all year
-Cross Country 10-12. Varsity. Manager in 12th. "Captain" (quotes because ther really is no captain, and my coach said we can all put we were captains hah)
-Class President 10. Record amount of sales for fundraisers for that year; did not run again due to conflicting schedule
-Tennis 10-12. JV
-IP Project (explained in additional info)
-Bunch of smaller clubs that aren't that important.

Additional Information (on common app):
-I was in IP, a yearlong project that required the groups to make an entertaining and educational film AND play that was presented live.
-I was leader, bibliographer, historian, video editor, actor of the group.
-I put in excerpts of the video portion (do you think the adcom will actually watch?) YouTube - Scene- Tony runs away from home YouTube - Scene- Reagan Day
Please like and comment the videos by the way! That is if you actually liked them.

Recs- Good I think

Essays- Great!

SAT:
1770 now. Taking it in Oct. Will raise it over 2000.

SAT Subjects (US History, math 1, math 2):
Taking in Nov. Assuming that I'll get 700+ for all.

So yeah, ideally, what are the best colleges I can get into, after I take my SATs? I want to know the match and high reaches hah.

Assuming that you get exactly 2000 on your SATs and exactly 700 on all your SATIIs I would recommend some of the schools: Obviously theres a lot more schools where you can get a great education

MIT: High Reach
Cornell: High Reach/Reach
UIUC: Low Reach/High Match
Carnegie Mellon: Low Reach
University of Michigan Ann Arbor: High Match/Match
RPI: Match
UCLA: Reach (Assuming you are not from CA)
UC San Diego: Low Reach

Not to be a killjoy but I dont think admission officers will have time to watch the youtube videos simply because there is not a lot of time to read each applicant’s resume and essays. In my opinion, it would be better to focus on your essays and trying to convey your interest and place in whatever university you are applying to. Also, I do not recommend taking UC History if you are going to be applying to Engineering. That’s just my two cents though.

Overall, I think that if you raise your SAT/SATII score you will be a very strong applicant for all the schools above and many more!

Hey I really appreciate your response man, though I think it really is impossible for me to get into MIT or schools of that caliber lol (I will apply to Cornell, however, as that school will likely be my highest reach imo).

Damit, that really is a killjoy :/. I worked so hard on my junior year on this project. You think there’s a possible way to convey my efforts?

I love your location lol. I still watch professional Starcraft to this day, and I’m loving Starcraft 2 =p. I’m presuming you’re a Starcraft enthusiast yourself hah.

@qweasd: hahaha I just watched part of your videos – interesting, but most people have made short clips for projects so I really doubt it will have a huge impact on your admission. Maybe you can mention your interest in making videos(?). You would have to have more you work on two videos to support your effort in something like that though.

Also, a slight correction on my previous post: I meant SATII US History, not UC History. If you’re doing engineering, I would suggest taking Chem/Physics/Bio (pick one) + Math 2 (the curve on the IIC is significantly better than the Math 1).

Haha, you should apply to where you want to attend, regardless of your chances. If you don’t apply your chances are 0.000% : )

Btw, haven’t moved over to Starcraft II yet (i seriously should sometime soon haha)

Best of luck x 2! If you have any more questions you can just PM me : )

Hah. Let me tell you, the audience were laughing so much throughout the presentation- whether it was due to the acting, absurdity, it doesn’t matter. We got a standing ovation and my group got a good grade so it all works out. The majority of the project was research, actually, which was graded by my US Hist teacher. I’ll just leave my Additional Information in there. It can’t hurt to put it in there hah.

Yeah I forgot to change that I’m taking SAT Chem and Math 1 (I think I can perform just as well). I’m pretty busy, but I just might take the SAT Lit because I don’t think you can even study for that anyways.

Maybe. I forgot to mention I would be a first gen, so maybe that hook can get me somewhere I normally wouldn’t be able to. For now, Cornell remains my highest reach hah.

Yeah, after you get accepted to a college that you know you’ll enroll in (which will be Cornell; you shoulda ED Columbia!), THEN start playing SC2. The game’s really fun.

@qweasd: haha well the Cornell engineering colleges (both some in CALS + all of COE) are much higher in terms of ranking/has more research oppurtunities than Columbia SEAS. You can probably argue that Columbia is slightly more famous in general, but I think the education in some respects matters much more than the prestige.

If you really feel like the videos are important, than feel free to keep them in there : ) After all, I don’t really have the right to say whether or not it should be there.

Also, keep in mind that while Math 2 may have a better curve, it is much harder and valued more for engineering colleges like Cornell and Columbia.

Seriously, I should just apply to only UC Berkeley and take the game theory Starcraft class there and join their starcraft team LOL jk
