College recommendations

Hi guys,

I'm Grant. I need some recommendations of some colleges. I hope to one day be a news anchor either on television or on the radio. I have been working at a local frequency radio station since I was 16. I have be an on-air talent, engineer, and producer on the sports staff. I have had many discussions with television anchors through email and even on the phone. Unfortunately, many of the anchors have had very board recommendations, so I have not been able to narrow down my college choices. I hope to apply to 10+ colleges. (13 is ideal) I want to hopefully major in broadcast journalism and be able to participate on campus TV and radio stations. I want to get my foot in the door asap, whether it is at a college or professional affiliate station. I currently have low test scores on my SAT. 490 CR, 530 Math, and 550 writing. Unfortunately since I was little I have had issues with time on tests. I have successfully applied for extra time on the October and December tests. I know the road to becoming a news anchor is a competitive one, but I'm willing to give it my all to be successful in the industry. I want to go to a school with great broadcasting internships that I can take full advantage of. Thank you all for reading this, and any recommendation will help me in the long run. P.S. I already applied to Mizzou. (Of Course)

Kind regards,

Grant

By the way, I have a 3.77 GPA and a 3.95 Cal Grant GPA. I live in California, but I can live anywhere. I have had straight A’s for four straight semesters as well.

What can your family afford? You would be out of state most of the good journalism programs.

The first thing I would check are those schools that are “test optional” then narrow down the list based on majors offered.

Ithaca might be a possibility. Very expensive though, and merit not likely unless you bring up your scores.

I’m very fortunate financially. My parents have the money to pay for any university I would like to go to. I would love to go out of state. Hopefully I can get extra time on the sat. I didn’t even finish halfway through each section.

If the standardized tests improve a bit with the extra time consider Syracuse (Newhouse) and Emerson.

Thanks happy1! I’ll look into those schools.

SF State has an excellent broadcast journalism program. I second Ithaca and Emerson for out of state.

You might make it into Ohio U which has a good J program.

Erin’s Dad and qialah: Thanks for the recommendations!

I’ve made a list and I want to know what you guys think

American, Depaul, Ithaca, NYU, Emerson, BU, USC, Missouri, Syracuse, TCU, Chapman, Miami, Georgia

Any additions or substitutions I should make? I’m on the fence with Illinois and Ohio U because I wasn’t impressed with my college visit.
