College Recommendations

I’m interested in astronomy, astrophysics, cell biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, linguistics, anthropology, and materials science. I love cities and would like to go to school in a city with a good transportation system, as I do not plan to have a car. I’m already interested in MIT, Rice, UChicago, RHIT, and Carnegie Mellon. I’m planning on taking one of the most rigorous schedules in the history of my school and I test well, so I’m (overly) optimistic about being somewhat competitive. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Sorry for being like the other 80000000 freshmen who make threads like this.

Several NYC schools might be appropriate for you.

Ehh, I doubt my dad would let me apply. UChicago is dubious as is, because apparently Hyde Park is dangerous. Do you have any specific schools?

“20 of the Safest Cities in the World” / Business Insider. New York is the only U.S. city in the top ten. The neighborhoods of several NYC colleges tend to be safe, interesting and close to subway stations.

Really? I’ll keep that in mind. Also, my dad absolutely DESPISES New York for other reasons that I’m not going to mention, so that’ll make convincing him to let me even visit hard. Yeesh, that last sentence was terrible. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Hyde Park is actually a fairly nice neighborhood. I’d worry more about the rest of the south side of Chicago, mostly the streets much further south (the “wild hunnids”). You should be able to fine pretty much everything you need within Hyde Park or downtown so you should be quite safe. I would just personally recommend living on campus all four years.

You have no GPA or test scores yet… come back at start of junior year.

Post # 6 explains why posters held off on mentioning specific schools btw. This won’t stop you from exploring colleges – through various sources – that offer courses of study and styles of education that seem suitable for you. When you have a full profile yourself, this knowledge will be invaluable.
