College Recommendations?

Hey all,

I asked my history teacher for a rec and he’ll write one for me. The other teacher is my first choice teacher but the class is a science research class, so I don’t know if it would count as a “academic” class. My counselor said the research teacher’s rec would be fine because I’ll have her for four years.
Would colleges consider the rec even if it came from an “elective” course although it is still a full year honors class for me?
I really wanted her recommendation because I’m either going into research/biology or business (gov teacher’s rec).

Thanks so much! Please don’t try to make me feel better if it really isn’t an academic class because that’ll hurt me in the long run.

If your guidance counselor said it is fine, then I’d go with that. I think it is fine as well.
If you are still uncomfortable you can ask the research teacher to do a supplemental recommendation and ask another STEM teacher.

@happy1 Also I wanted to clarify it was “core academic” recs the college wants. Am I safe still?

It’s science. If in doubt, call or email the AO of the colleges you are interested in.

If I sent it in, and College A only wants letters from “core academic subjects”, would they know it is not from a core academic teacher? If that happens, would they reject my application since they require the letter of rec from “a core academic”?

How do colleges know?

The colleges won’t know, and even if they do, they won’t care. It’s a science course, and the teacher is interacting with you regularly. It’s not as if this is a film class and all you do is watch movies, with zero interaction with the teacher.

@DeeperBlue25 Great thank you!
