Not sure whether this is a school-specific question or whether all admissions offices would handle this similarly...

If a student withdraws from a school prior to the start of class, does the college assign a "W" to all classes and this record follows the student with them to any other college they may attend or is there no record required?

Is there a cut-off period that determines when a school assigns a "W" vs. an "F" in a course? Can a college indicate an "F" for a course if the student withdraws from the school itself?

If you withdraw from the school before classes start you should not have any grades for that semester. If you do not withdraw at some point a W becomes an F.

No, there is generally a drop-add period at the beginning of each semester. At my kid’s school, no W’s are given until later in the semester (during withdrawal period). Search the school’s website for their academic calendar/grading policies.

Many schools have a “shopping” period, when classes can be dropped and added, and the dropped classes do not appear on the transcript.

After that, usually there is a date by which you can withdraw with a W (usually it is mid-semester, and should be marked on the academic calendar)

If you decide to withdraw from the school all together, there are some dates to keep in mind wrt tuition refunds (they vary by school)
