Hi,
Please, help me with my research (particularly grammar and vocabulary). I’m concerned about the adjectives like “acoustical” or “poly-segmental”, “mono-segmental”. Are they ok for the linguistic research?
Here’s the excerpt:
The acoustical group comprises 112 corresponding markers, among them there are such mono-segmental nominations as: to laugh (56 times), to chuckle (29 times), to giggle (2 times), to squeak (1 time), to squeal (1 time), laughter (11), a laugh (8 times), a chuckle (3 times), a giggle (1 time). A vivid exemplification of one of them is:
Edward chuckled and deftly maneuvered out of the hug…
The verb chuckle means “to laugh quietly” (Oxford Wordpower Dictionary: 126), which is used in vampire’s speech quite often.
Concerning the poly-segmental nominations, they are represented mainly by the pattern to laugh “a certain kind of” a laugh:
Carlisle laughed another weary laugh.
In the given example fatigue is mingled with joy, still it produces an effect of a cheerful mood.
The total number of cases of the verbal expression nomination comprises 53 occurrences. The lexical units of direct nomination are: nouns – joy (6) and happiness (5); adjectives – glad (17), happy (9), amused (5), delighted (4), sanguine (2), euphoric (1), e.g.:
“I’m so glad you came to see me today, Jacob”, she said.
As for the indirect nomination, there are several metaphors together with a simile:
Happiness expanded like an explosion inside me…
…and smiled a wide smile that gleamed in the moonlight.
