<p>Everybody in these parts knows that the only 2 states to ever go to war with just each other are Michigan and Ohio. That makes the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry bigger than just a college or gridiron rivalry. To this day, people who dare to enter Ohio with Michigan license plates routinely claim to be targeted by everyone in Ohio from state police officers to football fans.</p>
<p>Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes would not say the word "Michigan." He also famously returned to Ohio on fumes after a recruiting trip to Michigan because he refused to stop for gas in Michigan. But my favorite story is that near the end of one terribly lopsided victory of Ohio State over Michigan, Hayes had his Buckeyes go for a 2-point conversion after a touchdown. After the game, a reporter asked him why he went for "2" after the touchdown. He replied, "Because I couldn't go for 3."</p>

<p>In the LAC world, Furman - Davidson. </p>
<p>Furman is in South Carolina Davidson is in North Carolina, They are the two top academic schools in Southern Conf. Dean at FU used to teach at Davidson, Daidson is 1/2 the size of FU so they can be more selective so FU doesn't get the academic notoriety Davidson does.</p>
<p>In DI, Alabama -Auburn is pretty crazy. Army- Navy is intense. U Miami- Fla State is rough. Clemson - South Carolina is very emotional. Then theres Neb Okla, Texas - Okla</p>
<p>For those of you who have pooh-poohed Lafayette-Lehigh (saw others got the order wrong). don't knock it unless you have LIVED it. I couldn't even show up at my Lehigh grad school classes during that week, since everyone knew I came from the REAL school down the road in Easton.</p>
<p>I live in the area--Laf/Lehigh is intense.</p>
<p>Yeah, I live in the area too... most of the smart kids from my high school go to either Lafayette or Lehigh (or a few other privates in the area). </p>
<p>And I think its a great rivalry, kids drink hard for it, but its not that intense compared to some other rivalries (Duke UNC or Mich OSU). Also, this years game was more disappointing than most I can remember (compare that to Mich OSU in football).</p>

<p>UVa-VaTech can be a pretty fierce rivalry on many levels. Many UVa people deride VaTech as being the epitomy of "State U". And for a while, Tech's informal description of itself was "THE University of Virginia". Rather telling that nobody at UVa called themselves "THE VTech of Virginia". But perhaps I'm a little biased.</p>
