You sound aware and I’m sure this will be a good trip. I do agree about tours over info sessions, in general. Best wishes.
The average student accepted at W&M, U of R and UVA has above a 4.0 GPA. Out of state applicants should try to be in the upper 75th percentile of the stats shown on the Common Data Set.
In addition to Mary Washington check out CNU in Newport News (20 minutes from W&M). It’s about 5,000 students total and the new buildings seem to be trying to replicate UVA. It has become more selective than JMU. JMU and GMU seem much larger than you prefer. I like C of C and UNC Wilmington. Have you looked into Rollins College in FL?
Yes to CofC, Furman, Elon, Roanoke, Muhlenburg. I would add Gettysburg to the suggestions. If you go west to Ohio, consider Allegheny. Richmond, W&M, Davidson, UVA may all be reaches.
Thanks for adding to my list and my on-going MapQuest file! We are staying north-ish as DD2 is not interested in warm, sun, or beach. We had two graduates from our HS both go to W&M this year and DD2 is at their level plus much more interesting life story and EC’s. Off to check out CNU and Gettyburg. I am thinking we will need to do a northeast route and then go back later to do Ohio etc… I was hoping for this to be about 8 days and not a full two weeks so it is not all a blur (and we want to sneak in a weekend in St Augustine to visit with greatly missed DD1).
Look through the CTCL books and give the director a call. She may be able to help narrow the schools for your road trip based upon your conversation.
If you are going to Ohio, swing by Miami of Ohio in Oxford. It will be a bit different than the others on your list.
Oh my…just researched Kenyon in Ohio. Lovely school and fabulous programs. NPC was quite generous after the sticker shock of $61k. Looks like an Ohio side trip will need to be figured in with four schools to take a peek at.
That’s Furman COA .
Kenyon is very close to Denison and not far from Wooster, sort of in between, actually. (Not sure if I said that earlier, if not…there. If I did, sorry for the repeat)
Glad we are not traveling this weekend to the VA and Ohio area! Looks like this trip will be in VA and Ohio and nixing UNC Willmington and anything in NC or south. We had dear daughter take a gooooood look at all that snow and she said “I would just stay in and study or read”. Ok then… cold climate it is! I will return with the close to final list of colleges to visit, drive by, walk around to get the vibe.
Most of Ohio is fine. Any route that includes I-75 however, needs a few days. Safe travels!
Eugene Lang is very expensive, not known for good FA, strengths are mainly in the social sciences and some humanities, and lacks some resources*.
If you’re looking at Eugene Lang, you may as well look at NYU as they are practically next door to each other, just as expensive/problematic with FA, and strengths aren’t limited to the social sciences and some humanities***.
- Lang and New School Grad students often need to access NYU's libraries as their own library is extremely small and undergoing renovations so their stacks are scattered chaotically about. It's an issue most New School students I know have mentioned along with my own observation** of hit-or-miss in basic maintenance such as reliability of plumbing in bathrooms.
** In the course of visiting some New School grad student friends giving an academic presentation.
*** If your D has any possible interest in the sciences even as a minor…Eugene Lang isn’t the right school for that.

If you go to Ohio, you might want to include a trip to Centre College in Danville in KY. It’s a 2 hour drive south of Cincinnati Ohio and it’s a CTCL. They have plenty of snow right now!
