My daughter is interested in going to University of the Pacific and I was wondering if anyone can tell me how safe it is? I have heard the surrounding neighborhood of Stockton has high crime. Should that be a concern? I mean I know it should be but many good schools seem to be in high crime neighborhoods and it seems hard to avoid.
Have you looked at the school’s safety report online? They are required to post those. The thing is that most “urban” schools, on the surface, appear to have problems but it’s all in where you go and how you handle yourself. Practicing reasonable caution is sensible no matter where you are: don’t walk alone, don’t wear earphones or keep your cell phone out and visible, let friends know where you are going, etc. If your daughter is interested in the school, has a teacher there that she likes or whatever, by all means, go an check it out- they’ve produced some nice voices recently!
The entire central valley is a bit of a pit, but the area surrounding UOP is actually pretty nice. Also the campus is pretty huge so it’s insulated from the rest of Stockton. It’s no more or less dangerous than any campus in an urban area.
