College Scholarships for ACT scores

My daughter has a 4.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Her class rank is 7 out of 499. She is very active in school activities and volunteering in the community. She has a 32 Super score ACT 31 normal score. She wants to go into nursing. I know from a previous posting that U of Alabama will waive tuition with a 32 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT score. She is now eligible for 2/3 off with her 31. Are there other schools that will do something similar based on her scores? We live in Illinois and would like her to stay in the mid west but I am interested in other schools as well.

What about Marquette, no scholarship guarantee, but she should get something. They also offer merit scholarships which require separate applications and have a scholarship competition in the Feb./Mar timeframe.
I think the best money goes to those who apply by Dec 1.

And you might want to look at Xavier.

There are lots of schools that would offer a student with your D’s GPA and ACT very large merit awards. If she’s interested in the Midwestern big state university scene, she might look at Michigan State. A lot of moderately selective LACs offer guaranteed scholarships based on stats.

Carthage offers a set amount for ACT scores (I believe $11,000 p/year for 34-36, $10,000 for 32-34 etc.) but I don’t know if they have a nursing program. Carroll College does, but I’m not sure of their merit aid. Alot of LAC’s, including Marquette, will give you around $10,000 p/year for merit; however, this brings the cost down a little but usually not to state levels. My oldest S considered Marquette and with all merit aid (including the scholarship he won there, Wisconsin Excellence Award, NMF $2000 p/year award etc.) it was still $7,000 more than our flagship.

Marquette offers up to $14,000.00 in merit scholarship. [Ignatius Scholarships | Marquette University](Père Marquette Awards // Undergraduate Admissions // Marquette University) They have a direct admission nursing program that is very competitive [Nursing major: Facts & what you can do with a major in nursing from Marquette.](http://www.marquette.edu/explore/major_nursing.shtml)

How much do you want to end up paying each year?

That answer will help us with recommendations. Obviously, it won’t help you much if you want to keep the total cost per year at - say $20k - if we recommend schools that will give your D a merit scholarship still leaves you with $35k+ per year to pay.

For instance, there are some privates that will likely give her about $10-15k off per year, but since their overall costs are high ($50k or so), that means you’d still pay about $35k per year.

When we were looking at merit scholarships for our kids, some high COA schools offered what seemed to be “big scholarships” (in dollar amount), but they didn’t reduce the total cost as much as schools with lower COAs who offered merit scholarships that were smaller or the same in total dollar amount.

Obviously, a $15k scholarship at a school that has a COA of $35k is much more meaningful than a $15k or $20k scholarship at a school that has a COA of $50k.

I think your D should test again during the next 2 months…and take the SAT as well. An ACT 32 or 1400 M+CR SAT seems to be the magic number for larger merit at some schools. (Some schools require a 1420 M+CR)

Also…be aware of any scholarship that is for a “set dollar amount” (like $15k per year). That amount will NOT likely rise with each tuition increase. The tuition cost that you’re looking at right now is for the CURRENT school year…NOT NEXT fall or the later years…which will rise each year. With each increase, the worth of that $15k scholarship will be lessened.

Look for scholarships that are for “full tuition”…“half tuition”…2/3 tuition…etc. And read the fine print…some schools do state that they won’t increase the scholarship as tuition increases.

BTW…Bama does increase its scholarships as tuition increases.

Also, Bama has a LOT of students from Illinois because of those scholarships.

For example, University of Evansville (COA ~$39K)

another alabama school with automatic merit… cost can be lowered with a different meal plan than shown her…her current scores would leave you about 9-14K per year to pay… if your D is a science person, uab would be excellent…it does offer 149 majors but best known for sciences and anything health related…Tier 1 university, urban campus, about 11K undergrads 17K total including grad students
