I just got an email that I was accepted into this program and I wanted to see if someone could tell me more about it.

Here is some recent info – [U.Va.?s College Science Scholars To Present Research in Oct. 17 Symposium | UVA Today](U.Va.’s College Science Scholars To Present Research in Oct. 17 Symposium | UVA Today)

Congratulations! That’s quite prestigious (only 1 in 200 offered). There’s info about it on the UVA website, but presumably you wanted personal experience & such?

if anyone could offer personal experience that would be great
also, do CSS get any special privileges, like Echols?

I’m a current College Science Scholar (Class of 2015) and I actually presented in the symposium that somebody linked to on this thread.

CSS does have priority enrollment in classes (like Echols). The other main benefits come from the close interaction with major faculty members and the funding that is designated to the CSS program. For example, I received $5,000 to remain at UVa last summer and to conduct research and that opportunity is specific to CSS students. It’s also a relatively small group so you’re placed in with your peers who help motivate you to conduct good research and you have the older CSS students who are more than happy to help mentor you and answer your questions.

Let me know if you have anymore questions that I can help out with!

Wow that helps a lot! And that sounds really cool. Do we get special housing like Echols?

Yes. Scholar Housing includes Echols, Rodman, CSS, and College Arts Scholars. Echols and Rodman are just the ones normally discussed since they are much larger in comparison to CSS and College Arts (maybe 20 students a class tops).

That’s cool. Is the housing nicer?

It was a bigger deal last year and this year when Balz-Dobie and Watson-Webb were the only new dorms. I think that for the Class of 2017 they intend on having new dorms opening although I could be mistaken. Those dorms will be a lot similar to the current Scholar housing. They’re very nice buildings though and a lot of other students around Grounds would call them “hotels.”

Thanks this is really helpful. I’ll PM you if I have any other questions
