College Search Sites

Which ones do you recommend?

I am looking specifically for ones that do not assume that I am in high school, because I graduated last year and am currently attending a community college in Minnesota.

I honestly have not found ANY college search websites which are truely competent... and trust me, I've searched for one extensively. What type of stats do you want to search by?

Location?
SAT?
Major?
Size?
Cost?

Some search engines are better for one over another. Give CCers some stats and they'll be sure to give some great recs!

Good luck!

Location: I'd like to stay in Minnesota, open to suggestions though.

SAT: Hehe.. I never took it. I'm at a community college right now. Will take it if necessary, scored a 27 on the ACT-pre without trying, 35 in reading comprehension and 34 in language. After 3/4 of a year of college, I would be interested to see where I am at now.

Major: History. Going for at least a B.A.

Size: Not really concerned about it, if I go to a Minnesota college, I will probably just drive anyway- don't have to stay on campus.

Cost: Up in the air, the cheaper the better.

Best bet is to pay the $15 and get access to the US News & World Report College Guide premium site. (Do a google search for US News then click on education, then pay the $15 and you're in) Then, just look at all of the colleges in Minnesota for a start. In Minnesota, Carleton, Macalester, St. Olaf and Gustavos Adolphus would be my main choices for history. U Minn. Twin Cities would also be a good choice if you want a larger school. Moving slightly farther - try U of Wisconsin-Madison, Beloit, Coe in Iowa, U of South Dakota, Knox in Illinois. All have very decent history departments and welcome transfers. Good luck.

Does that site contain additional information about transfers?

I have tried PrincetonReview, but like many other searches, it assumes that I am in high school.

Contact the admissions offices of the colleges you are considering. Just write a very general email and send it to all of them. The information you get this way will be better then anything you'd get at a college site.
