College Search (ugh...)

So, I am currently a junior located in the midwest and just starting my college search. I have absolutely no idea what type of college that I should be looking at, and any advice will help.My parents and I have been saving for awhile, so price may not be the biggest factor, but lower tuition would be nice because I know I will be going into grad school for any profession I choose. I am interested in law, pre med, or international relations, so any schools that are strong in those areas would be nice. I would prefer to stay in the midwest, but I'm open to schools anywhere.

Stats-

SAT-2300
ACT-35

GPA- UW-3.87 W-4.4-4.6? Definitely trending up
(most rigorous course load available with emphasis on math and sciences. 6 APs senior year also.)

Awards- probably NMF, some local and state math and science competitions

ECs (just listing the ones I am most involved in+leadership in all of these)-
4 years varsity debate(very intense at my school)
school and club tennis
NHS
Spanish NHS
FBLA
a mentor program at our school
research at local college

Volunteering- around 175 hours this year

I have thought about Mich and USC, but would like to know about some other schools that would fit me. Thanks for your help.

Have you looked at Rice University in Texas? Its a great school, in Texas, and has a great pre-med program. seems perfect for you

Your parents have been saving, but do you know how much they’ve saved?

Ask them if they can afford to pay $50k per year (which is what many privates cost…and some OOS publics cost).

You have the stats for some big merit at some schools especially if you’re NMF. Be sure to take the SAT because you’lll need that to become NMF.

Also, ask your parents if you can use your college savings for med school if you go to a school with a big merit scholarship for undergrad.

How important is Div I sports to you??? Football? Basketball??

Look at ivies and duke.

Look here for some good NMF scholarships: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/649276-nmf-scholarships-updated-compilation.html</a>
Denison University offers full tuition which would allow you to keep most of what’s saved for grad schools.
You could also get some good merit aid at U Dayton.

Take a look at this list too: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html</a></p>

Have you run all of the search engines? Here are three good ones:
[College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics)
[College Search - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/)
[College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Each of these takes different factors into account in the search, and includes different factors in the results, so it is worth your time to run all three.

Have your parents run any of the financial aid calculators? Now that tax season is over, they should do that so that you know what you are likely to be expected to pay:
[Pay for College - College Scholarships - Financial Aid - School Loans - Easyplanner](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools)
[FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Expected Family Contribution (EFC) Calculator - Finaid)

Have you talked with your parents about what they can pay without any aid? Please do. That is the figure you will need to use when you hunt down your Financial Safety schools.

Everyone needs at least one rock-solid safety that they can love. This is a place where you know you will be guaranteed admissions based on your stats (some public universities publish this info. on their websites), that you know you can pay for without any aid other than federally determined (FAFSA) aid, that offers your major(s), and where you can be happy if all else goes wrong in the application process. Find this institution first. Apply early if it is a rolling admissions institution, so that you are in line for any goodies that they have to hand out such as priority registration, priority housing, or early cut-off-date scholarships.
