I’m currently a junior in high school and I’m starting to look at colleges. I’m from New York City but am currently living with my grandmother in Rome. I want to apply to mostly small liberal arts colleges in the Northeast but am open to larger universities as well. It’s important to me that the schools I apply to have strong Psychology, Sociology, and Italian language departments, and that they also have good singing and acting opportunities. My projected ACT score is about a 31 and my GPA is around a 3.7. I’m aiming to apply to 9 schools (3 reach, 3 target, 3 safety) and this is what my list looks like right now:
Reach:
-Vassar College
-Kenyon College
-Northeastern College
Target:
-Skidmore College
-Boston University
-Union College
Safety:
-Dickinson College
-Sarah Lawrence College
-Hampshire College
I pretty much have to find my ED school this month, and I’m looking for suggestions from others. At this point, a lot of schools check off all of my boxes, but I want to apply to the school that just “feels” right. Does anyone have suggestions for schools like the ones listed about in the Northeast that feel like welcoming, happy, close-knit communities?
Your reach and match list is good but unfortunately Dickinson is a match, SLC and Hampshire are low matches not safeties.
Your two limiting factors will be strong Italian dept and theater activities.
Another issue is that someone who likes the fit at Union and Northeastern would likely hate Sarah Lawrence and Hampshire, and vice versa.
Buy a Fiske guide.
Are you instate anywhere?
What’s your EFC? Can your parents afford that EFC?
I agree, you don’t have a safety. I also agree that the vibe of these schools is wildly different, and that a careful reading of Fiske would be helpful.
I don’t think it’s a “chance me”. It’s a thread asking for suggestions, so “college search” is fine.
@snazzystudent499 : look into Clark - Wheaton, MA - Fordham - Ithaca - Muhlenberg.
Large universities will have what you are looking for psychology+Italian although involvement in theater will be more difficult (due to Performing arts majors in specialized school) so considering they’re big and you like smaller environments, look into Honors Colleges at SUNY Bing, Temple, Penn State, U Delaware…
@snazzystudent499 Try College of the Holy Cross. Meets your criteria and would likely be a target.
If you want to stay close to NYC try Drew in New Jersey. Really nice college in a historic town and right next to the commuter train to NYC. Pretty campus and strong academics. Could be a safety
