College Search

Hey guys,

I’m a current high school junior looking at colleges. There are a bunch of choices, and I am having trouble narrowing down my options. I’m interested in going down the pre-med route, so I would like to keep my cost to a minimum by either staying in state (NC) or receiving merit scholarships to make tuition comparable to in-state tuition. I’d like to be at a place that challenges me and prepares me to get accepted to medical school. However, I still want to enjoy the “college experience”, and hang out with friends, play sports, go to parties, attend sporting events, etc. Here are my “stats”:
3.95 UW/4.4 W GPA
Top 10% of class
30 ACT
I would appreciate, any advice, info or suggestions on schools to look into. Thanks!

If you want to get financial aid, your best bet is to go to an OOS school (besides going to one of the NC state schools). If it is financially affordable/you are able to do so, I would suggest re-taking the ACT. It does not exactly match up with your school grades.

It is hard to pick schools because of the difference in your grades/ACT score.

Actually if you need FA, you will not find it at OOS (publics), at least most of the time. There are many private (instate and OOS) schools where you could probably be awarded enough merit to match the cost of your instate tuition. What kind of schools do you feel would be a good fit? Large, small? City setting or more suburban/rural? How do you feel about Greek life? What geographic areas would you consider? Typically if your stats are near the top of the admitted students, you’re a desirable candidate and will be offered merit to entice you to enroll. Most of the CTCL schools are known for good merit awards (Colleges That Change Lives). You can find the list of them online. But if you share more of what you’re looking for in a school, you will get a lot more suggestions.
