COLLEGE SELECTION HELP- James Madison vs. Rutgers

James Madison University- out of state. total cost= 31,089 a year.
Rutgers University- in state. total cost- 24,589 a year.

i visited JMU and fell in love. i visited Rutgers and felt it was so-so.

I'll most likely major in Liberal Arts. Location isn't an issue. Social scene is a big deal for me

I'll have scholarships and my parents helping me for cost so the price of college isn't really an issue, but i'd like it to be as cheap as possible for mine, and my parent's sake.

pyeccs - If cost is not an issue, than you really need to consider what type of a campus environment you want. JMU and Rutgers are too different places. JMU is in a suburban/rural location. New Brunswick is more suburban/city. I am not sure about the social scene at Rutgers, but I do know you can take the train to the NYC, Princeton, Philly, etc. You cannot do that in H-burg. There is nothing wrong with the social scene at JMU. I am an alum and my daughter will be a freshman in the fall. However, at JMU you will be doing things on campus and in town. Parties will be local. There are also a lot of opportunities to do outdoorsy type of stuff. If you like a city and the opportunities it presents, than go to Rutgers. I think JMU gives a better on-campus college experience, which isn’t what everyone wants. You need to decide what you want!

If cost is a factor the difference is $26,000 plus additional travel costs to Harrisonburg (it’s not an exceptionally easy place for travel). If your family is going to be taking out any loans for school adding this is not a small amount.
