College Selection Help

Hi,

My GPA is 4.00.
I am second in my graduating class.
My highest SAT scores all added together are 1590.
I am African American.
I live in New York.

I want to study Chemical, Biomedical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering.
I have a list of about 10 schools already, but I want to know what everyone recommends.

What is your SAT score breakdown? Is Math higher than the other sections?

SUNY Buffalo comes to mind - it has a good engineering school. SUNY Binghamton also, although it will be a reach with your SAT scores. Purdue is another option, although it will be more expensive out-of-state. RIT.

Do you want a large school or a small school? If you want a smaller school, Rowan in NJ might be a good safety school.

As the previous poster implied, what can you afford?

Have you taken SAT II’s or the ACT? A school that’s SAT optional and would be impressed by your grades might be worth looking at----like Bates but they don’t have engineering. Possibly Smith if you’re a girl.

I have taken the SAT ll’s and I am taking the ACT in December.
Cost is not an issue.
My scores are 560 M 530 CR 480 W in Oct 2010 and 500 M 550 CR 480 W in May 2010. On SAT ll I got a 570 in Math l.
I have no preference for school size and I am looking for schools on the east coast for the most part.

I would take a look at the following:

Syracuse
Drexel
Union
Smith
WPI

The last three are SAT optional.

List your choices so we can know what to go off of.

My original list is:
CUNY - City College
SUNY - Binghamton
SUNY - University at Buffalo
SUNY - Stony Brook
Elon University (Dual Enrollment Engineering)
Duke University
Rensselaer Poly
Northeastern
Syracuse
MIT [Lonnnnnnnng shot. I know.]

[Alfred University - Inamori School of Engineering](http://engineering.alfred.edu/) Alfred University (NY)

[RIT - Programs of Study](http://www.rit.edu/programs/program_listing.php?display=degree&loc=ugrad)

RIT, Rochester, NY

[Areas of Study](Academic Programs | Union College) Union College Schenectady, NY

[Clarkson University: Undergraduate Programs](http://clarkson.edu/engineering/undergrad.html) Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY

Do the SUNYs accept superscoring?

What is your best SAT from a single sitting?

Your superscored SAT is about an ACT 22. I don’t think that’s high enough for RPI, Duke, Syracuse, or Northeastern.

Is there a reason why you’re limiting yourself to NE schools? If you’re fine with going to SUNYs then fine, otherwise, I think you need to expand your geography.

Are you taking Calculus? Some engineering programs require that you be Calculus-ready freshman year. What was your math SAT score?

Duke and MIT are beyond reach with those SAT scores - I wouldn’t bother applying to them, and try to pick more reasonable reaches.

Try Case Western for engineering

My best SAT from a single sitting is 1570 (M,CR,W).
The main reason I picked NE schools because of travel expense but I am pretty open if there is a better school out there for me.
I am now taking calc at a college since my school does not offer that.
My math SAT score is 560 and my Math l SAT ll is 570.

I also have Drexel on my list.

Case Western would be nearly as bad as MIT and Duke for the stats. 25%ile is 1830 and standardized test scores are very important.

I am trying to see if there are any good SAT optional school I can find. This isn’t looking too good.

“I am trying to see if there are any good SAT optional school I can find. This isn’t looking too good.”

So glad to hear that - Your SAT is likely to keep you out of most schools on your list. I would say all, but I don’t have first hand knowledge of the NY schools.

Please spend your time on the test optional schools, students like you are the reason some schools have gone test optional… You’ll find someplace thats perfect for you. But do your research…

You should probably apply to some of the smaller SUNY’s as well - the 3 you listed are going to be looking for higher SAT scores, particularly Binghamton. If you were not an instate kid, your chances for one of the university centers would be better. Honestly, without a strong math background, the engineering curriculum at the universities is probably going to be difficult to handle. You might do better with a smaller school and be able to transfer in after a year or two.

The main reason I picked NE schools because of travel expense but I am pretty open if there is a better school out there for me.

Good…because I really think you need to expand your geography.

You shouldn’t worry about travel costs. It’s better for you spend $35k for an OOS public and have to pay some travel costs, then to pay $45k+ for Drexel. It will be cheaper for you to pay $35k plus travel than to go to Drexel.

Glad to hear that you’re taking college calculus. :)

I am definitely trying to look though the list of SAT-optional schools. (It is really long)
I also want to look at the smaller SUNY schools. I just do not know which one.
@mom2collegekids You are so right about that. I did not even think about it that way.
