College selection(urgent)

I am an out of state student in california .. and have gotten into CSULA , San Diego State University, UC Merced an San Jose State University. I am very confused which school to go to . I am taking a Biological Sciences major. I want to goto a school where there is studying but not only that there is some fun as well i am primarily thinking of going to merced and transferring to a good uc after one year but i am told that because of the budget cutbacks, transfers are more hard now I really need some advice right now.

I would go to UC Merced based on the options you have.

thanks early college . but do you know if merced has anything fun going on for it ?

I hear san diego state is one of the top CSUs. It has a big student body and an ideal location. maybe check that one out

As a nonresident, you’d be paying $45k for Merced, which in my humble opinion isn’t worth it. Cal State will be around $15k less a year. I can’t speak to the relative quality of the academics at SDSU vs San Jose, but of all the options SDSU is the classic four-year college experience, with football, parties, etc etc etc. However, it’s a huge school where many students take longer than four years to finish.

Cal State LA strikes me as more of a commuter school.

Lots of people say that the CSU’s is like going to college at a McDonalds. That’s what a professor has said, but you should get a good education. UC Merced will look better overall.

If your intentions are to transfer up to a better UC, just go straight to a california community college. even though you aren’t a resident, the money you save attending a CC(even as a non resident) will save you a lot much more money than attending a cal state or a uc for the first two years, and at the very very least you can be guaranteed a spot at a mid tier uc, assuming you get the grades and sign a transfer agreement with school. check out the uc transfer thread. i don’t know much about the community colleges around the state of california, but i’ve heard stuff of Santa Barbara CC and the social life being strong, because many tend to group together and rent a place and sometimes party with the people from UCSB.

I’m curious, why do you need to go to college in California as an out-of-state student?

im from india and have just got a green card , i dont beome a resident of cali till next year , so thats y i have to goto college as an out os state student.and majority of my family is here in cali so i really want to go here .

do you think going to san jose state university would be better than going to uc merced? because both ways i want to transfer to a good uc or a better school. state univerities are cheaper also.

I would go to Merced, in your case. Since you plan to transfer, it will be easier to transfer to another UC from Merced.

The UC Transfer Priority Goes like so:

 1. CC’s
 2. UC’s
 3. CSU’s
 4. other schools

Yep I agree with Marie. You should get in to another UC if your grades are good.

thanks u guys:)
