I know that I should really think about this when I find out who my roommate is and have sorted out who's gonna bring what, but I was just wondering what things people bring to their dorms... any advises?

oh and also, when should I buy a laptop? my parents think I should buy one like a week or so before I move in because technology changes so fast and if I buy one right now, it might not be so high-tech by the time I get to ND

The laptop is a good question...I am in the same predicament. Don't know what to get or where to get it... any current or recent students have an opinion on types of computers that work well at ND?

LoL. Your laptop will be fine if you buy it now. Get one with a wireless adapter already in it. Some necessities:
1. Flip flops for shower
2. Mini-fridge
3. Hot Pot
4. Towels
5. X-large twin sheets/comforter and pillows
6. Lots of clothes for warm, humid weather
7. umbrella
8. Shower caddy
9. FANS
10. TV

Most of this stuff you can get in South Bend when you get there if you're coming from far away like I did. Also, you need to make sure you have either a water filtering pitcher or be prepared to buy lots of bottled water. The tap water at ND is unbearable.

well I live in VA so I think I'll drive up to ND since hauling my stuff via plane is expensiveeee... 10 hour drive... sigh.... so things like toiletteries and stuff I think I'll buy once I'm there. But I guess we'll all have clearer idea of what to bring once we find out who our roommates are.

speaking of roommates, I found it weird that we can't even choose our preference on smoking, non-smoking roommate...

oh pizzahut, ND's Office of Information Technologies says they can support both Mac and Windows PCs. Apple gives a free ipod nano to college students when they buy a mac if you're looking for deals. OIT's site has discount for Thinkpad laptops too.

I recommend buying a laptop as soon as possible. It's true technology turns over very fast, but you also have to make sure you have time to master the learning curve. You will want time to make sure your laptop is set up the way you like it, as well as knowing your way around your machine, before you get to school.

Might I also recommend getting a Mac? It's definitely worth the investment, especially because of its ease of use. If you have any questions, just let me know. Let's just say I highly recommend it.

oh I forgot OIT just sent brochures about laptops. It says Don't Delay in bold inside :) and they show deals they have on a Mac and a Lenovo Thinkpad.

hmmm I was gonna buy one on like August 10th or something, but you're right... I should be able to use it comfortably and get used to it ASAP...

I think I'm gonna go ask my parents to go to a Bestbuy with me tomorrow ;)

no. don't buy a mac. get a dell. and get a mouse with it; no one wants to spend all their time with some annoying touch pad.

just don't overpack. chances are your t-shirt wardrobe will double with ND shirts. you won't need winter clothing till after fall break. only buy a fan if you're not in an air-conditioned dorm, which you don't know yet.

there's also a huge list in some "preparing for college" thread somewhere on college confidential. total alphabetic list. can't miss anything.

hm.. do students get like free ND shirts?
I mean I'm pretty sure I'll buy ND shirts and sweatshirts and all that no matter what they cost, but just curious...

I got mine in June of last year and, incidentally, it is what I am typing on now. Don't stress over it too much. Get a computer that you will be comfortable with, since you'll use it primarily for email (CONSTANTLY, by the way), word processing and the internet in general. If you're doing engineering, your choice might be a little more limited, since some software is only available on PC.

Also, I got my first Mac and had no trouble getting used to it, in case anyone has worries about that, and I've been using a PC all of my life.

As for t-shirts, they hand out free shirts at lots of events like Domer Fest with things like Lafortune or Stephan Center written on the front. You also get a dorm shirt every year and lots of organizations have their own t shirts.

on my computer for liek 150 extra i got a tv tuner that allows me to watch tv on my computer wit a cable jack... you can record all you shows to like tivo--i highly recommend it!

will i be able to just split the cable to be able to use my computer for t.v. too?

I counted how many shirts I had acquired at school just before I left to go back home, and the number was 12 t-shirts in one year, just school related, and I did not buy nearly as many as offered.

dunno... it may be? but maybe not cuz it's like you said motorized...

lol were you at the freshman chat a few months ago? someone asked if he can bring a golf cart to campus and the faculty responder was like... uh... absolutely no

and yes, I think you'll be able to split it but you'll have to bring a y splitter (radio shack) and two extra cables

wouldn't you rather wach tv episodes online or seomthing tho? abc has that

Last thing, is online file sharing prohibited at ND? like P2P or bittorrent stuff?
just wondering

most "online file sharing" (read: illegal music downloading) is prohibited on notre dame's internet/wireless services. they apparently can track it pretty easily too, so limewire isn't used on campus.

i don't know about "bittorrent" or other programs but mostly they make it very clear that you shouldnt' be downloading music, etc.

Uh...it's a bit more serious than a detention, I think, but yes, it is indeed a disciplinary action. They give you info on all of that coming in, so naturally I have forgotten most of it. It may hurt your chances at studying abroad, and you're only allowed a certain low number before you're asked to leave.
