College Similar to Tufts for a B Student

Hi,

My son is smart, but didn't always apply himself:). He has slightly above a B average and a 29 on the ACT.

I feel that a school like Tufts would be a prefect fit for him, unfortunately he will not get in with his GPA and ACT score. The reason I like Tufts for him is:
1. beautiful suburban atmosphere, but near a good city
2. smallish in size
3. has a decent amount of sports centered activities
4. good school with a good reputation across the country

Does anyone have any thoughts on schools that would have these similar qualities of Tufts that my son can get into.

Thanks for your help!

american u, tulane, smu,

Ursinus in Philadelphia suburbs

Santa Clara, TCU, Trinity (Texas), U of San Diego.

Holy Cross, William & Mary.

^ William & Mary for B students?!

The problem that your son may have is the low GPA. I looked at American and Trinity University stats on the college board site and they both admit less than 20 percent with less than a 3.25 GPA. Perhaps the ACT score will help compensate for the lower GPA. Tulane also accepts less than 20 percent with a GPA less than 3.25 but their mid 50 percent act scores are 29-32. A low GPA with a 29 act would probably not get him admitted to Tulane.

I would look at TCU, Loyola (Maryland), Loyola (NOLA), maybe SMU.

A “B” student could technically range anywhere between a 2.7 (B-) to a 3.3 (B+)…believe it or not, big difference in admissions…

Know a bunch of 3.3 kids entering Tulane in the fall…

rodney- thats interesting. from the Common Data Set- it appears that a 29 ACT is on the bottom end of the mid50% ACT range and more than 80% of students have over 3.25 GPA.

Take a look at Goucher.
