I am a University Sophomore as of the 2012 Summer Quarter and I received a 3.27 GPA during my freshmen year in total (3 quarters). The reason this happened was because I received C's in two math classes that I took (one per quarter) and this happened because I was heavily concentrating on my Physics classes (which I got B+ and an A in).
Hypothetically, if I show improvement (as in 3.6+GPA) from here on out, would you recommend me retaking those two classes in the upcoming Summer Quarter and have the letter grade replaced in my GPA even though the letter C grades will still appear on my transcript?

Also, I am highly considering changing my major from biology to microbiology because after extensive research on both topics, I have come to the realization that microbiology interests me much more than regular biology and I believe that I will do better in those classes.

Thank you for your feedback. All feedback is welcome.
Sincerely,
Pre-Med Sophomore

Are you considering DO schools? Otherwise, you’d be better off taking more upper level sciences, as it looks better (if you retake a course, it’s expected you’ll do better, since you’ve taken it before) and will prepare you more for your future studies (there isn’t much math in med school, judging from the accounts on here).

Thanks for the tip! My only problem has been two math classes that I have taken. Other than that, I have not had trouble in my University science classes so far and I am beginning Chemistry and Biology in the fall. Do you think that my chances are already over? Is there still hope to get into a competitive medical school in the U.S. ?

Nah, you’re still fine. You’re only one year in, and it’s expected that the transition to college may be a bit bumpy at first. Don’t worry about getting into top medical schools, though, as all you really need to do is get into ONE med school; all med schools will give you an equally good education. This isn’t to say you can’t or won’t make it into a top school, but you shouldn’t stress yourself out about needing to be at the top. :)

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice I appreciate it. I guess I am just going to keep working hard (very hard). Thanks again!

You’re welcome! Keep it up, and don’t stress too much – aiming for a career in health is never worth your health! Good luck!
