College strong in math, science and engineering in the east.

My D is a junior and a CT resident. Aside for UConn what college should we consider, preferably in the North East that are strong in engineering, math and science. She has a 3.8 gpa; has not taken sat's yet. Cost does matter. Thanks.

Please read <a href=“Before you ask which colleges to apply to, please consider - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1621234-before-you-ask-which-colleges-to-apply-to-please-consider.html</a> , particularly points 1, 4, and 5. Others will be able to help you better if you give more detail.

If cost Does matter then you might look at the SUNY schools which are a relative bargain for OOS students. I’m not sure how the costs compare to UConn in-state.

Most colleges outside of Connecticut is going to be pricey for you. With solid grades you might get a significant financial aid package from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Also, SUNY Plattsburgh has a very good sciences program, complete with a brand new science building. We toured the Physics Department a few years ago and came away impressed. There’s no engineering at Plattsburgh but the Physics Department has close ties to RPI and sends SUNY students to RPI for summer research projects and graduate engineering degrees.

Think about other private engineering colleges like Case Western Reserve University and Lafayette College. Don’t overlook Princeton, which I understands meets 100% of financial need for students at a specific income level. Find out if engineering Departments at Columbia, Yale and Penn do the same.

Drexel has an excellent engineering department. It is expensive, but I think a fair amount of financial aid is available. Stevens Institute in NJ is also excellent.

You might also check out RIT. It’s a little less expensive than the others and offers co-op programs that can help with cost and finding a job. Since price is a factor, check out UAlabama, too. Don’t laugh. I know it’s far from CT, but they offer high scoring students free tuition and very good facilities in STEM. I’m a northern bigot, but UAlabama has a lot going for it.

University of Rochester

Olin College of Engineering

I second Olin.

Thank you all for your responses.

Does anyone have any experience with job placement at Uconn for the engineering program?

U of Rochester, Lehigh, Villanova, Bucknell, Union, RPI. These all have strong engineering programs and give good financial aid packages.
