college student anomaly

i am a student who has just finished his sophomore year of college studies. i spent 3 semesters at loyola marymount university, and because i did not like the school and was unsure about what major to pursue i took a leave of absence and finished the year at fullerton college.

i am not sure whether or not i want to continue with business or pursue art (illustration/graphic design). at LMU my gpa was a 2.98 and i have 2 W's. My gpa at fullerton was 4.0 but i took all art studio classes this semester (15 units) i plan to finish my ge's at fullerton to save money.

i guess what my question is, assuming that i get a 4.0 for the next two semesters, do i have any chance of transfering to schools like:

UCLA
UCI
UC Berkeley
CSU Long Beach
USC
OTIS
CCA

You need to talk to a transfer counselor asap. You have a mix of 4year and California community college and your transfer plans will not necessarily be the same as someone who ONLY went to a CCC (often more restrictions and VERY strict limit of # of credits… be careful once you accumulate more than about 86 semester credits because several of the UCs won’t look at you bc they feel you have too many credits and come in as a super-junior or even senior in raw #s. It doesn’t matter if they are all lower-division classes, they count those beans closely.)

If you have 3 semesters at 2.98 and 2 more semesters at a 4.0 (the third semester won’t be figured in by application time… ) your GPA would be maybe as high as 3.4 …

A 3.4 is a bit on the low side for UCLA and Berkeley, though not unheard of, either. It also depends on the major. If you hunt around, I know UCLA and UCI have VERY detailed charts that state their admissions for transfers by major and GPA of applicant, so you can go see how you line up. Some majors are just more competitive than others.

I think you would want to throw in several safety schools that you can “live with” if you can’t get into any on your list. The UCs and CSUs will likely be very hard hit by budget cuts, so it is anyone’s guess what admission rates for transfers will look like in a year.

I think if your trend is upward (4.0) that you should be able to get into a few of those schools, but you really need to target one or two safety schools because it is just going to be an unpredictable transfer year next year.

Annika

If you have over 90 transferrable semester units, you’ll be considered a senior transfer and ineligible to gain admission to the UC’s.

Keep that in mind when scheduling so you don’t go over.

What if it’s 1 semester at a 4 year and the rest at UG? I am in a similar situation.
