hi my daughter is a junior in high school. she has to choose couple colleges now but she has no idea. please help me. she is not the smartest girl in school. she has been an honor roll student for all three years in high school. her gpa is 3.57 (Weighted) out of 4.77 she has been always taking honor classes. she took two ap classes; ap world and ap physics. She has alot of activities. She has been in student council for three years. She has created her own organization; new glasses.(outside of school) she has written a book and published it. She has seven awards: congressional award, obama congratulatory letter, hoby award, Ryla award, NY hillary clinton award, presidential award, hoby ambassador award. She has attended both leadership camp: hoby and RYLA as school representative. She is part of jazz band and marching band and pit for three years now. She is the secretary of music honors society. She is in church leadership team. She has been part of church praise team for two years now. She volunteers at a family shelter. She has been interning every summer. She works twice a week. She has alot of activities. However, her grades are not outstanding. She does not have any specific major in mind. She wants to go to the best "name valued" school that she can go to. Any suggestions? thank you.

what are her test scores? and tell her that going to the best ‘name valued’ school is the worst way she could ever look for a school.

She has received 30 on ACT. She has taken physics SAT 2 720 and Korean SAT2 800

When making the application list, find the safeties first.

Must have assured admission.

Must have assured affordability.

Must be academically and otherwise appropriate, and must be where the student wants to go.

Note that weighted GPA is usually meaningless to those outside your high school, since high schools vary in how their weight (and colleges often recalculate or just holistically look at the transcript rather than use the high school’s weighting). Class rank can be important at some colleges.

Your in-state state universities are often good places to look for safety candidates. University of Alabama - Birmingham may also be worth consideration as a safety with the large scholarships available for stats (3.0 GPA and 28 ACT gets the Blazer Elite Scholarship of $15,000 per year – leaves about $10,000 per year remaining cost of attendance for out of state).
