College Suggestions for Junior

He hasn’t decided yet. Still waiting to hear about additional scholarships. I’ve given him a deadline of April 1, lol! I’m tired of him being in limbo, but it’s not bothering him at all. Haha!

Re: letters of rec, if you can get more than one good one, then it’s okay to submit more than one to UT. They also like you to submit a detailed resume.

Also, my son went to both of these free business camps, and I think they helped his applications:

UT Dynamc

UH Explore Business

Hopefully the deeper need based aid they are now promoting at Rice will be doable if accepted there. My friend’s son who was a NMF got enough aid there last year to make it exactly $8,000 higher than their EFC. He turned them down for UT Plan II. I was not aware that TCU and Baylor offered full tuition for a 1540? Is that new @coolguy40?

TCU’s Chancellor Scholarship is full tuition.

Baylor offers Regent’s Gold for NMF, which is either full-tuition or very close.

I don’t think these are automatic, but he has a good chance with a 1540 SAT.

Bentley University https://www.bentley.edu/
Babson College http://www.babson.edu/ (next door to Olin Engineering with some collaboration)
and why not Ivies like:
UPenn https://www.wharton.upenn.edu/ (financial aid would be excellent)
Cornell https://business.cornell.edu/programs/undergraduate/

Some kids really know what they want. An argument can always be made for a broader, less career-focused undergrad focus but when my spouse did his MBA I was intrigued by how interesting the classes were in that area of study :slight_smile:

@jazzymomof7 actually this is the last year (HS Class of 2019) Baylor offers the Regents Gold. Starting next year, they do not have a NMF scholarship although it’s not clear if they are adding additional $s to the Faculty scholarship, the other full tuition merit based scholarship. The link your provided confirms.

@gollycollege, we are still deciding!

So since I originally wrote my reply, here’s what has changed:

  • accepted to Plan II at UT (yay!)
  • did not get invited to SMU Presidential scholars, which was surprising. They have her their top auto merit (30k) plus a Dedman scholarship which requires a phone interview and seems competitive (another 10). But that means 40 off of 76. Not happening. SMU is a fine school but it’s not appealing at the 36/year price point when we have other options that are better fit for less.
  • competed in Trinity Tower scholarship competition yesterday. Only 1-in-16 win. It’s a full tuition scholarship so that would only leave room and board. If she wins, it’s on the table. If not, the price point after merit (32, because of Murchison scholarship) is too high.
  • southwestern called and offered her the Garey scholarship, which is an extra 5k towards experiences, a few weeks ago. But she’s no longer interested in Southeestern.
  • still waiting on Rice and a few mega reaches (Ivies plus Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford.)

It’s most likely she will choose Plan II at UT. It’s a prestigious program at an unbeatable value. We’ve been very impressed with the program info so far - small class sizes, tons of faculty interaction, internships and study abroad heavily emphasized, a rigorous liberal arts education but within a major research institution. The outcomes for Plan II grads seem hard to beat for 25k per year.

Yay! for Plan II! I have heard nothing but great things about it. And yes, it is an unbeatable price with an excellent ROI. Please update about the other choices when you can. Thank you!

@Meadow530
@jazzymomof7
did you create a transcript that shows “endorsements” as specified by Texas Education Agency House Bill 5? I am a little confused about that.

No, we didn’t. But I did state in the school profile I wrote that she completed a course sequence that met or surpassed the blah blah blah diploma standards set forth by the TEA. (Can’t remember the official wording that I used.) Maybe it was “distinguished level of achievement”?

No, I didn’t list any endorsements.

For the title of the transcript, I put this at the top, centered:

High School Transcript
Distinguished Academic Plan
