UM-CP gave you a scholarship for NHispanic? Does it cover tuition, room, board, and books? If not, what does it cover?

Was the scholarship based on anything else - like SAT/ACT scores or other things?? I didn’t know that UM-CP gave full-rides for National scholars. I thought it only gave token scholarships for national scholars. Maybe your scholarship isn’t offered anymore?

It is not a scholarship for National Hispanic, I’m sorry I should have made it clearer.

The Banneker Key scholarship is either 8,000 dollars a year or full ride (there are two levels). It was originally created as a scholarship for minority students, but after a similar scholarship where race didn’t matter disappeared there were cries of reverse racism and the scholarship was opened up.
The money was originally meant to be for minorities, and you will hear a lot of b*tching about it on the CC board, but a large number of black and hispanic students are still awarded it.
To get the scholarship you have to be in the Honors college and 400 students get offered the scholarship. Everyone is interviewed and after that the level you recieve is decided.
Honors admission is based a lot on numbers.
The scholarship is based more on all encompassing of extra curriculars, life experience, etc. They want kids who will contribute to the school so you will more likely get it if you are more than just numbers to them.

What I think confused you was when I said that application fee is automatically waived for National Hispanic Merit Scholars. (And National Merit)

Northeastern in Boston offers full tuition scholarships for NMF (room/board would still cost $15K+). Not sure about National Hispanic. They have an “experiential learning” requirement, often satisfied with co-op but there are other options too.

Your brother might like St. Josephs, Penn State, Pitt, UConn, Syracuse and, if he makes Finalist, Penn and Columbia.

Among good small schools (although not in cities) which I think would be very generous to a URM are Skidmore, Union, Muhlenberg, Susquehanna and Franklin & Marshall
Best of luck.

Penn and Columbia? They do not offer merit scholarships.
