College suggestions - Maybe Digital Media studies

My youngest son is a rising HS junior. We're starting to think of colleges and majors and I could use some input. He's a B student but will most likely get an A in APUSH and two computer programming classes and another technology class. He's on a fairly rigorous path for his school taking AP's and honors and involved in the Robotics club. Next year two classes that he is looking forward to are Mass Communications and AP Computer Science. The last couple of years he has gotten more involved with making animated movies on his computer from his computer games. I understand that he posts them on youtube as sort of ad's for his favorite games. He recently finished a live action dvd for a class that involved a lot of digital editing that he did with a software program that he got for his birthday. In short I think that a possible major would be something like digital media.

He thinks this sounds interesting too, but is not sure, which I think makes sense, but might give us a direction to start with. I did a quick search and came up about a dozen colleges that have an actual Digital Media major, and a few of them sound interesting. As a safety, it looks like nearby Kutztown University of PA might fit that bill.

Any suggestions for B student Colleges with this major or something close to it? I'm guessing that other colleges have a program with this content but a different title. I'm not too worried about the cost at this point, we'll knock the ones we can't afford after some research.

Back in the dark ages H and I both graduated from Towson with Mass Comm degrees. I took a Corporate Communications path and H went toward (what was then called) video production. 20+ years later H owns and runs a full service digital media company.

H has found that Towson is still putting out competent grads in the field. He uses them for interns and freelancers often. He is also VERY happy with an employee he hired fresh out of RIT.

If he’s doing well in AP CS, then he probably has some aptitude in math and science which means that he could consider math, science and engineering fields.

Our daughter might be interested in a Digital Media major too. At the moment, she is interested in Graphic Design as she likes to draw in addition to dabbling in digital media and programming. I’m certainly interested in your findings.

We looked at RIT for game design. They do have several art/design/animation majors. I have known several graphic art majors who liked Kent State.

there was a parent on these boards a while back whose son was in a very cool sounding digital media program at (i think) either Ohio U or Ohio state. Maybe one of the other cc oldtimers can give a bit more info than I can provide.

I just went to the RIT website and found a major in New Media Interactive Development , “The last decade has seen unprecedented innovation in technologies for communication, computation, interactivity, and delivery of information. Two huge underlying factors—Internet connectivity and computer processing—have transformed the media landscape dramatically. New media is dynamic, personalized, and connected, and it changes the way we learn, communicate, affiliate, and play. For the world to benefit from these changes, there is a need for practitioners who can integrate evolving technologies with creative disciplines. The BS in new media interactive development was developed to meet this need. ABET does not accredit programs in this field.”

This looks pretty interesting and bonus(!) my nephew will be a freshman there this fall. Anyone have experience with this major?

DougBetsy, is this the major that your employee got from RIT?

I just asked H. He didn’t have the employee’s resume at his fingertips, but said New Media Interactive Development doesn’t sound like his degree.

He said NMID sounds like it has a focus on the web. Our employee is much more focused on video editing (primary) and production (secondary). H thinks Employee’s major had the word “Arts” in it. I tried to push him to be more specific, but he was rushing out and didn’t have a chance to think hard.

It sounds like the media corollary to the Sound Recording Technology major.

Thanks DougBetsy, Maybe Visual Arts?

BCEagle - This might be interesting for your daughter, from the RIT website:

Participants can enjoy this selection during the College and Careers program: Join members of the Women in Engineering program (WE@RIT) for an exciting opportunity to learn about the impact women make on the engineering field. Learn what it’s like to be an engineer and what it’s like to be a female student at RIT.
The weird thing is from the above ^ it looks like this event is just for girls but when you go to the event page it looks like it’s co-ed and just for HS rising seniors. My oldest son did this and thought it was worthwhile.

The best programs here in Ohio appear to be University of Cincinnatti and Ohio University. The only problem is that I don’t believe a “B” student can get into either program. They’re very competive. I had also read about the RIT program and thought it sounded interesting, but once again, it could have a very competitive admissions process. Kent State and Bowling Green State U. would be less competitive.

U of Arizona has a media arts major within the school of fine arts.

Ahh, I have another nephew at the U of A! Kent State looks interesting too. I don’t think RIT is out of the ballpark, son’s scores (so far) are pretty much in line with the accepted students.

I’m kind of excited to be pointed in a few directions!

RPI has an electronic media major as well as various other related majors.[RPI: Undergraduate Majors and Degrees: Listed Alphabetically](http://www.rpi.edu/academics/undergraduate/degrees-alpha.html)
It might be a bit of a stretch for a B student.

WPI has Interactive Media and Game Development. [Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Majors & Minors](http://www.admissions.wpi.edu/Academics/majors.html)

Unknown to most but making quite a bit of headway is the Creative Media Institute program at New Mexico State University http://cmi.nmsu.edu/</a><br>
“New Mexico State University’s Creative Media Institute (CMI) offers the Bachelor of Creative Media degree. CMI is a dynamic cross-disciplinary program that prepares students for the 21st century in Digital Filmmaking and Animation & Visual Effects.
The CMI curriculum focuses on the art, craft, and business of storytelling. Our students choose one area of emphasis, but they study all aspects of digital filmmaking and digital arts, whether they are aspiring writers, directors, cinematographers, animators.
Theory and practice are integrated at every step. Students manipulate text, sound, images, and cinema using industry-standard technology.CMI houses a state of the art digital projection system screening room, post-production lab, animation lab, and production space.”

I assume as a Pennsylvanian you’ve already considered CMU.

DePaul University is very strong in this area:

kathiep, A quick search for Digital Media majors turned up the following:
Canisius
DePaul
Drexel
Marist
Butler
Cleveland State
Tulane
Baylor

That’s funny, I did a search on collegedata and came up with a different list! Marist was on both lists and looks worth exploring.

Sorry, I just read the last three replies from page 1. I think RPI is a pretty good reach, but will keep it on the list. CMU is also a reach. DePaul is a name I’ve heard of but never looked at. Their program looks quite interesting. On the other end of the country, New Mexico’s program looks a little too broad and the 12% four year graduation rate is a bit too low. It sure is interesting checking out all the different options.

I really appreciate hearing about all these colleges. Thanks!

Willamette University has started a digital media program. New building for digital stuff for fall 2009.

Washington (Udub-HCI), Toronto (Digital Graphics Program) that DS has been associated with.

Kathie, there was a poster a few years back called Digmedia who had a son majoring in digital media at Ohio University. I think he was in the honors program there. Digmedia had many good things to report about the program at OU. Good luck with your search!
