We need help with college suggestions. My daughter wants to pursue vocal performance study BUT does not want to give up exposure to theatre and dance. She would prefer to attend school in the southeast or northeast regions and we live in New Jersey. She has the voice without a question, Allstate and Eastern Choir but her academics are a bit shy of her talent. She is a good student, 3.25 GPA, but not an exceptional one and she was a star athletic in High School, an active volunteer, therefore she is well rounded. Her brother is attending Muhlenberg and she does not want to be at the same school. AAAHHH sibling rivalry. She has no doubt that she wants to pursue a music vocation for it is her passion. I hesitate with the conservatory mode because of her drive for theater and sports also. BOTTOM LINE..can anyone suggest a good school with these requirements and one that won't cost a fortune since this will be my THIRD at college. Rutgers, Muhlenberg and....??? I will NEVER retire!

SUNY Fredonia

Coastal Carolina University. No, not in the northeast but with the number of Jersey plates here it would almost be like home without snow and the Giants. Theatre works very closely with voice faculty. Degree programs allow a fair amount of crossover. Just a suggestion.

Wagner, Staten Island - Grades may be a problem, but with other plusesits worth a try

James Nadison University, VA -- not the northeast -- but only 6 hours from NYC.... most of the students are from Northern, VA, DC, Maryland, NY,. NJ, CT.

BM in vocal performance and Music Theatre, BA in Musical Theatre. Students in the vocal performance option have the opportunity to take classes in school of theatre and dance.

Here grades are below the JMU average -- but because an audition is required for vocal performance, she could get a boost that way if the dept. is interested in her.

I teach at JMU in the Theatre and Dance program. PM me if you have any questions.

Plymouth State University in NH -- Vocal performance and Pedagogy degree in the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance... students can take acting and dance classes, and audition for plays and musicals.

Have you checked out St. Thomas University in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada?
St. Thomas is a small liberal arts university, with about 2,500 students, average class size is 31, and there will never be more than 60 students in your class!
60% of entering students have scholarships, and 10% have renewable scholarships. The total cost of attendance at St. Thomas for international students is under $20,000!

St. Thomas also has a wonderful theater program, called Theater St. Thomas

^^^Just so you know, you are responding to posts that are 1 1/2 years old.

It is important that information that is shared about colleges here be as accurate as possible. I have looked into St. Thomas University in New Brunswick. I have heard of the school as my daughter’s classmate (K-12) is a senior there (not in the arts).

St. Thomas does not have a Theater department or major or program. It offers some fine arts classes that include one in MT History and Performance and one in Dance History and Performance. That’s it. It’s not a major either.

Further “Theater St. Thomas” is not an academic department or program. Rather, it is an extracurricular organization that puts on productions that any student on campus may participate in. Most colleges, regardless of academic programs offered, have extracurricular organizations on campus that put on shows.

So, to be clear, this school does NOT offer a THEATER PROGRAM (as an academic offering).

RMSTU10, you found an old thread to post on. I have now noticed that you have multiple posts on CC that are almost identical, that taut your school. It is one thing to be enthusiastic about one’s college or to be willing to share information on certain topics and it is another to be doing PR for the school all over CC’s forums.

I’m bothering to post as I care that the information shared about theater colleges is accurate in terms of facts presented (opinions about schools are another matter of course).

I’m sorry for the misunderstanding, Theatre St. Thomas is an extra-curricular program, I apologize for failing to properly make that clear.

I am very enthusiastic about St. Thomas University and want to share my experience here with others who may benefit from the same university experience that I am presently getting.

I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies for the unintentional confusion and hope that my inaccurate post has not caused any harm. When I made the orginal post, I failed to notice that this thread was over a year old.
