College Suggestions?

Hey guys! I've been trying to start the college search process, and I really don't know where to start. My guidance counselor is pretty useless so I'm seeking advice from this forum.
I'm looking for a school in the northeast, south, or midwest that is medium or large sized. I'm kind of preppy and would like a school where I could watch some good sports teams!
I have a 3.95 UW w/ most rigorous course load (#2 in class of 80 at a private school in CT) and a 2240 SAT (790 CR, 700 M, and 750 W)- might retake in June b/c that was my first time taking it. I plan to take subject tests in May (Math II and Lit). I have already visited Middlebury (didn't like) and BC (maybe a little too close?). Any help would be appreciated :)

do you know what you want to major in? what are your EC’s?

I have no idea what I want to major in.
As for EC’s (this will be through senior year, will include leadership positions I have already had and will automatically have next year (we don’t do reelections))
4 years of school Drama Club (2 plays/year)
4 years of school Musical club (1 full musical and 1 song only musical/ year)
4 years of chorus
3 years of weekend/ summer waitressing
4 years of school people to people student chapter (VP in 10, P in 11 +12)
4 years of being an admissions tour guide for school
4 years of varsity volleyball
1 year of JV and 3 years of varsity basketball
4 years of varsity softball (captain 11 +12)
NHS (since spring of 10th)

Will your parents pay for whatever school you go to? Or, do you have a budget?

Do you want merit scholarships?

If you don’t know your major, can you tell us what you like more?? Sciences? Literature? Business? Music?

I’ll probably lean towards business or sciences.
I’ve discussed with my parents finances and stuff and they’re able to pay full for wherever I want to go.

Have you taken the PSAT? If so, did your score put you at or above the NMSF cutoff for your state?

I didn’t take the PSAT

suggestions anyone? :)

We need to know more about your preferences to make any helpful suggestion. Do you want a LAC or a research university? What size school would you like to attend? Are you looking for colleges in specific geographical areas? What environment would you like (urban, suburban, rural)?

Once you answer these question you will get much better suggestions than just going by your stats.

Your grades, scores and ECs make you a contender for any college in the US. There are, of course, no guarantees, so you need a balanced list of reach/match/safety. It seems to me that a counselor at a rigorous private school in CT should be able to provide direction. What’s the problem?

From what you’ve described, Duke, Dartmouth and Cornell, immediately come to mind.

Perhaps you could tell us more about what you didn’t like about Middlebury. If it was size or location, then that eliminates many of the small liberal arts colleges in the northeast. If it was something else, then I would look at Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Hamilton, Kenyon, Davidson.

For either medium or small privates be sure to submit a performance CD as a supplement to your application.

Yeah it was the rural location/ small size of Middlebury that turned me off. I’m not really a LAC person.

And the problem with my counselor is that he doesn’t listen to my preferences- I tell him I want a medium sized university that has a suburban/ urban location and he suggests Williams, Middlebury, and Bowdoin. This is only his second year (he’s super young) so he doesn’t really know very much about schools that are farther away. He isn’t normally a counselor but our grade has 30 more students than all the others so he his really just a math teacher who was thrown into the job.

Sorry about my previous post. I was multitasking between homework and CC and missed parts of the OP (d’oh!).

I agree with the poster above me; Cornell, Duke, & Dartmouth sound like good matches.

I would also like to add:

Northwestern
Tufts
University of Michigan
University of Miami
Villanova (you would be a top contender for the Villanova Scholarship)
Vanderbilt
UNC-CH

I also think I’m pretty good at finding reaches (like Duke and Dartmouth) it’s the matches/ safeties I’m having trouble with.

Thanks @jabrown2013 :)

Michigan
Unc

In addition to jabrown’s list: Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, George Washington, American, Emory, Rice, WUSTL, Notre Dame
