I know that I just created this account today but I’ve been on CC ever since my freshman year. I’m a junior now and every day this college thing gets more real, and even though I think I know a few things about each school, I really can’t decide on one that I should really look into or potentially apply ED/EA to, so please help me out.
A few things about me: I go to a competitive prep school in the south. My school has a weird grading system and we don’t rank. I have a 1550 on my SAT (750 EBRW + 800 Math), so I do think I qualify for a “top” college. I think I can write good essays, and I have a few ECs that I’ve been dedicated to throughout my high school career. I might major in philosophy or history or English but it’s too early to call now.
I wish to go to an intellectual school where people care about things like philosophy and literature; that said, from what I’ve read about UChicago and Swarthmore, they might be too serious for me. I’m pretty dedicated to creative writing and my dream jobs are screenwriters, TV writers or journalists, so I want to go to a more artsy environment. Even though I follow sports, I’m not a big fan of a jock/preppy environment. Although I’m a liberal, I want to stay away from political activism; some people are just too loud for me.
I really value the opinions of every one of y’all. Thanks!
I’m not sure if this is considered a top college but Emory seems like a good fit for you - we have a good English program and sports don’t dominate the social scene though our swimming and tennis teams are very good. If you like parties, around 30% of the student body is Greek. Atlanta has opportunities (CNN, etc.) for journalism and screenwriting so you will have all of that at your fingertips.
Vassar and Kenyon offer intellectual and generally artsy environments, but to different degrees. Hamilton offers a top writing program amid a fairly athletic student body. Williams and Pomona might be other schools to consider.
definitely check out kenyon. as for reach schools, look into yale and northwestern. if you can ignore political activism, wesleyan, vassar, brown, and oberlin sound good as well.
I’d certainly second Wesleyan, Kenyon, Brown, and Vassar in particular, Hamilton too. Maybe also Holy Cross in MA.
Academics are as strong as anywhere, and the school does a good job connecting great students to opportunities.
You’ve probably seen there’s a huge thread on intellectual colleges active right now on CC.
Given your desired attributes, Kenyon is the first school that comes to mind. Others to consider might be Hamilton, Brown and perhaps Haverford. If female, you could add Barnard and Mt. Holyoke.
I second Vassar, Wesleyan, Kenyon, Brown.
Also look at Pomona, William&Mary if the NPC shows it to be affordable, Carleton, Haverford (less intense than Swarthmore but intellectual and Quaker spirit).
Denison for their non fiction writing concentration would be a safety if you show interest.
Run the NPC on all the colleges listed here and discuss the results with your parents.
