College Summer Jobs/Internships related to theater

Has anyone gotten summer employment or any leads for summer performance opportunities?

xxx,Mary Anna

Mary Anna,

Can you clarify for whom you are hoping get work? Are these your current high school students or some of your previous students who are now in college programs? Are you looking for paying jobs only or also non-paying internships? Must it be in performance or could it be working as a non-performing apprentice in a professional theater. The age of the potential employees will have a great deal to do with the kind of opportunities that are available. Many professional theaters will not hire kids under the age of 18 (liability issues abound). Younger students will have more opportunities to perform in theme park environments,

Giving more info will help us provide more info.

Yes to all of the above.

It would be fun and imformative to note any summer peformance job opportunities and intern positions. These kids are very ambitious and resourceful and there is so much going on in the summers all over the country.

Yes, many do work in theme parks and summer festivals and stock beginning at the age of 16.

If any of you have found summer employment, please post. And if you know of opportunities, please post those too. My students are just now looking for summer work.

Mary Anna, have you checked out the Texas Nonprofit Theatres website? They have a message board with a link to employment opportunities. The TNT board is an excellent resource for auditions and scripts as well.

Last year, Six Flags live show auditions were held in January. It's not for everyone, but a young man in my daughter's voice studio really loved being in the "It's Playtime" show for the summer.

I think the MUNY in St Louis might offer summer stock opportunities to young performers, but I'm not sure how that works for performers under 18.

That's all I know. My own child will be turning 16 but will be too busy with summer programs to get a summer job!

Dramama and Mary Anna,

The MUNY in St Louis is an Equity theater that has open auditions in March for ensemble parts (see http://www.muny.org ). However, the vast majority of the ensemble positions go to students currently in college BFA MT programs already. While some small parts in individual shows are cast from the ensemble, leads and creative team members are all quite well known, experienced professionals, often Broadway vets. My daughter worked there last summer after her freshman year at UM. She and an extraordinarily talented young man (who had just graduated from highschool (!) and entered the UM MT BFA program this fall) were the youngest members of the company, he being 18 and she having just turned 19. Most students who accept contracts there get their Equity cards as a result, but it is possible to accept a contract and petition the Union to just get points under the Equity Member Candidates program (EMC) instead. One can audition as a singer or a dancer and auditions are HIGHLY competitive. If you audition as a dancer and survive the first few cuts, you will also be asked to sing. Some dancers then work as dancers and singers, as my daughter did, and some are not miked and dance only. I think it highly unlikely that anyone under 18 would be hired for the ensemble, but you never know!

If anyone has questions about working at the MUNY and can't find the answers on the website listed above, which is quite thorough, please feel free to email me. The show schedule for summer 2006, not listed yet, is supposed to be posted sometime in January.

Great info from everyone. Thanks so much. Everyone reading can benefit from these suggestions.

I know that CMU and other programs, expect their kids to find a job this summer and Shakespeare Dallas is on their list of suggestions. They are doing a musical version of Midsummer this season. I arranged for some of my students to audition over the Christmas break and all got call-backs.

Also there is an old thread here on CC with links to Strawhat (for older students) and Midwest Theatre, SETC and NETC auditions and many have jobs for younger teens.

Anyone here ever worked as an intern or apprentice at Williamstown?

Keep the info coming

The deadlines for most of these group auditions is either right around the corner or already past. Here's what I know:

For NETC, SETC, etc., I believe auditioners must either pre-qualify by auditioning in their local region (those pre-qualifying auditions are already over I believe) or audition as a dancer only. Even then, there is an application that must be filled out and a reasonably hefty fee to be paid (@$70-85) and I believe a recommendation from a director or choreographer is also required. I think the SETC application deadline for their March 1-5 auditions in Orlando is Jan 15.

Straw Hat audition slots also fill up really fast. They also decide whether or not to let you audition based on your resume/experience. And the later you apply, the harder to get a slot. Last year's deadline was around Jan 28 I think. My D applied at the very last minute last year and even as a freshman in the UM program, they didn't offer her an audition. There was an entire thread about these auditions last year. Check it out at

A classmate of my D's at UM apprenticed at Williamstown two summers ago (he worked at the MUNY with her last summer) and while I know he thought it a valuable experience, he reported that he worked like a DOG!! There are several programs there - some pay a little something I think and some you pay to attend. I don't remember the details but you can check this out at their website. I tried to copy their link but it wouldn't copy (very strange.....) but just google Williamstown Theater Festival and it will be the first link you get.

Hope this helps!

MaryAnna, do you know if the Midsummer Night's Dream musical version they are doing is the one by Randy Tallman?

I just went to their site and it is indeed.
My D did that show in a youth production a few years ago and I loved it!

I hope to catch it again this summer.

Yes, it absolutely is!

Randy is an old friend. He was at the auditions as was the director, Rene Moreno, and the artistic director of the Festival, Raphael Parry. My students will do their call-backs during Spring Break in March.

Apparantly, this musical version is very popular and done a lot at theatres and colleges all over the country. If you are interested in more info about the general auditions or other audition opportunities in the Dallas area, please PM or email me.

I'm a freshman theatre major at Yale, and I'll be consulting my advisor next week... but most of my friends in politics, engineering, etc. are applying for summer internships. Is there an equivalent in theatre? I know there is for tech, but how about more acting-related? Does anyone know of any particularly good ones? As in, more learning than coffee-mongering?

Also, I just switched coasts, so I don't really know what the east coast situation is with summerstock. Any insight? Really, any wisdom on how to make the most of the summer after freshman year would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you!

Check out the already started thread on Summer Jobs. Lots of good info there!

Collegemom, is it appropriate to tuck this post into that thread as it includes information on both jobs and internships? (Maybe add the internships to the title?) Your call. Thanks, as always

Thread on Internships started by Franklinbrown is now merged with thread on summer jobs in theater for college students.

Thanks Collegemom!

these are other summer job links

I have been reading old threads and even did a search and there is not very much information about internships. I am wondering if anyone has had kids who did one (or did one themselves)? and what it typically required?

Here's the story -
D auditioned this past weekend for a part in Ragtime with a new local company. Apparently they liked her enough that they had her read for Sara. Last night we got the call that they would like her in the ensemble and as an intern to understudy Sara. What dad and I are wondering is why have her be an 'intern' and not just do the part. Dad has a part also (grandfather - FYI we are a mixed race family they are not color blind casting) and is being paid more. D is thrilled with the offer and opportunity but we don't really know what it means.

The company has several different internships listed on their site, for technical positions and orchestra/performance, but these have a completely separate application procedure and later audition slots. D did not apply to this.

So after all this, I am wondering if others have done internships and what a student might gain from it that is different from just being a performer?

And if people would be willing to provide an opinion about whether she could take the part (ensemble- don't know if the understudy is what the internship is) and turn down an internship? The start date for interns is a week before regular rehearsals and D is out of the country during that week.
