College tour: Boston -> Buffalo

Thanks for the clarification @thshadow. If all you were looking for was a bigger school, then UMass certainly filled that need.

I don’t know when their term ends at Buffalo, but when my kid did yours, they had none starting two weeks before finals…so their students could study.

Tours usually end by a certain date, as Thumper indicated. SUNY Buffalo has plenty of tours going on throughout the year. There are multiple tours each day with additional tours of the dorms and different campuses.

Just one point about computer science at SUNY Buffalo - with the massive new medical complex in the city, and the new medical school under construction, there is a huge amount of computer-oriented research going on. This is a hot spot right now. Probably some good opportunities for students. Something to keep in mind for grad school as well.

We did tours / info sessions at 7 different schools, as well as drive-thrus at like another 4. You never know when “just one more tour” is enough to push your kid over the edge…

So, so far, after first imressions have dissipated or solidified, what are your daughter’s conclusions?

Can I say I’m exhausted reading your itinerary? LOL. I’m just reliving all the visits we did and remember being so physically exhausted at night that we’d get take-out, lay on the bed together at the hotel and go through our notes, falling asleep very early, only to start again the next day. Best of luck to you and your D

@theshadow Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! My D and her friends looking around now too (all girls interested in science/engineering but with slightly different bents both academically and personally.) They already knew about RPI (one visited and fell in insta-love) but I’m going to have to do some further digging into RIT now, as well!

Re: the comment you heard at Brandeis - that would have been a huge turn-off for my daughter as well! I don’t blame your D for getting a negative impression if someone in an official capacity is making statements like that. Even if it’s in the spirit of being “relatable” - well, relatable to whom?

Here’s my summary of “intangibles”:

  • Wants a concentrated mass of geeks. Either small / medium school that’s mainly STEM (e.g. RIT, Olin, RPI), or a large school that has a separate college with a high concentration of geeks (e.g. UMass Amherst).
  • Doesn’t like emphasis on athletics / jocks.
  • Doesn’t like party atmosphere.

I don’t think my daughter is going to have any further comments. Sometimes she’s willing to talk about it - but most of the time she’s like “Dad, all you ever want to talk about is colleges!!?!!”

Also - here’s a list of technological universities from wikipedia. All the schools my daughter seems to like are on that list (except for Olin, which probably should be on the list):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_technological_universities

So it seems like a good list.

^thank you

@thshadow I suppose Olin isn’t on that wikipedia list since it is a “college” not a “university.” Most people think of universities as places which offer post-graduate education. Although my son only starts there in September so I’m not an expert, I think it is safe to say that for most Oliners this is a feature, not a bug!

Here’s Wikipedia’s list of technological schools in an association that Olin does belong to. Olin is not an original member - the association was founded 40 years before Olin was conceived of! There is a link to the association’s web site at the Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Independent_Technological_Universities

This was a fun read. I was hoping to hear about SUNY Buffalo though! LOL

@thumper1 - Don’t know what about a thread titled “Boston -> Buffalo” would make you think we’d visit SUNY Buffalo… :))

Sorry we ran out of steam…
