Just a question i've been wondering about....do parents generally come to college tours or do most kids just go alone?

i think most parents come with their kids. i usually went alone, but i think the majority has their parents see the school as well.

I was unsure about that before my first tour. On every tour I went on students were accompanied by parents and ocassionally entire families.

Do you think there is any advantage to the student if the parents do not go on the tour?

from admissions perspective, no. i mean, the tours are huge so the tour guide def doesn't judge you simply by your tour.

as far as just for yourself, I guess if ur parents talk all the time and/or ask too many questions, they might prevent you from hearing more important info from the tour guide. but otherwise, i don't think there's any difference.

My daughter and I have toured over 10 colleges, and there were plenty of other parents. I don't really recall seeing any prospie without at least one parent. The only tour I wish I hadn't gone on was at my alma mater - alums (myself included) can be VERY distracting.

If you can, go by yourself. Parents tend to inhibit certain questions you may ask or affect your overall perception of the school. I visited 4 schools with a parent and 1 alone, and felt like I got more of what I needed when I went alone.

Plus you get how it feels to be on the campus alone without daddy.

No matter who you go with, DO break away on your own. Walk around, grab a snack at the student center, check out the library, see where people are hanging out, try to strike up a few conversations. It is hard to get a sense of a place when you're being herded around in an admissions tour group.

But, there's nothing wrong with bringing a parent. After all, they will probably have a financial stake in the school you choose so getting them on board with your choices is a good idea. :)
