Some scholarships are ‘last dollar’ ones that will pay anything left over after all other grants and scholarships are applied. It sounds like that is what this student receives. I’ll bet filing the FAFSA is required to receive the scholarship.
Some schools only give merit up to the cost of tuition.
When you first were notified about the award last year, in a letter maybe after acceptance, what did it say the amount of the scholarship was?
Some specific scholarships, are for tuition only. Or they are for full billable costs.
That’s not the issue the student is having. She has some extra discretionary…not mandatory…costs…a single room, and a car pass…and if she got a Pell refund, she would be able to use it to pay for these discretionary costs. The total is $600 per team for the room…and let’s guess $200 for the parking pass.
And she doesn’t want to take out loans.
To be honest…I believe the school is well within their rights to use financial aid dollars first…and scholarship money second…to pay her bills. But she is appealing this.
She is short less than $2000 a year and doesn’t want to pay for this herself.
