College Visit Reports - Suggestions

This is a suggestion for later, when there are more reviews added - you could have a page that showed the rankings and averages of schools on different categories, based on the reports.

Then again, knowing how obsessed with rankings some CCers get, maybe it wouldn’t be a great idea and would just result in competition and fake reports! A shame, it’d be fun to see the statistics.

Roger,
I would very much like to add Roanoke (VA) college, Champlain (VT) College and Kutztown University of PA. I just can’t figure out your reasoning for listing some colleges and not others. There are many colleges the same size or smaller, no better stats as the three I listed above that have zero posts. I have done reviews of each of these colleges. I have asked a couple of times about adding Roanoke to no response.

We started off listing colleges for which we had discussion forums, which in turn was based on past posting history here. We’ll add these.

Madjoy, we’ll take a look at that after we get a more significant sample size.

And, for those who have suggested it, we’ll have a new version out on Monday that when in “browse” mode will list only colleges with reports and show the number of reports.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Okay, I’m ready!

There doesn’t seem to be a full record of each individual’s reports. For example, quiltguru went on a full tour of colleges, but on their member profile only the last three posted reports are listed. Something similar to viewing all forum posts should be added.

Good point, Harro5. I thought the search function would do it, but I don’t think it’s set up to do that right now. We’ll add that to our “to do” list.

Roger,
It’s been a month since you said you would add Roanoke, Kutztown and Champlain. Should I just post 'em here??

I think the board should add Baruch College to the list due to the fact that the school is being discussed more.

I still find that a number of short answers are truncated. Maybe I don’t quite understand how to navigate this section. But I would like to see more space for the short answers and/or a way that they can be continued in a “general comments/summary” section. I feel like I’m missing a lot of what folks wrote (and I can’t find all of what I wrote  ).

I’m not sure if this is a problem only I’m having, or if it’s the system. In the past two weeks I’ve been on two colleges visit for the same school (one was specifically for honors, the other just a regular visit). I would like to post both sets of info, either as separate reports or in the same report, but I can’t do either. When I try to create a “new report” for the same school, it gives me the info. I put down for the previous visit. When I try editing this info to add the new stuff, when I hit post, it either says I don’t have permission, or it’s timed out (I’ve tried doing it quicker, but it still won’t take it down). Any suggestions?

The system is set up to allow one visit report per user. I’d suggest doing the two visits as a “composite”, and ranking the campus, etc., using your final impression.

Jmmom, are you seeing the character count indicator now?

I logged in, posted all my info and previewed. When I selected “edit” I was told that I was not logged in. So I logged in…again…and lost all that I had entered. This happened 2 times. Sorry I will not try again. Takes too much time.

Sorry, we’ve been working on some upgrades, could be you got caught in the middle of that.

Roger-- haven’t read thru all the posts here, so sorry if this is redundant.

When drilling down on any particular school, one gets a list of reports. That list is sortable by score. My suggestion is to add a new field to the header, Date of Visit, and make that sortable. That way, viewers can find the most recent visits easily, as some reports like mine, may not match well with the posting date (that is, I and others presumably have recently posted reports for visits some time ago.)

I think as the number of reports builds up for each school, readers are going to want to be more selective about picking which ones to read. Certainly the score sorting will help with their ability to pick, but the readers also might want to identify the most current visits, which may not line up with the posting date.

Good idea, Papa Chicken!

Roger,
One of the biggest complaints about CC is that smaller schools are not represented or talked about. At the end of August you said that you would add the three colleges I mentioned in post #22. It’s now the beginning of November and I still can’t post their reviews. There are quite a few smaller colleges without reviews and no activity under their name in the “Colleges” forum. I would really appreciate it if I could at least give my reviews of the colleges my son and I visited.

the ratings at next to each report are misleading. When I first saw the rating, I thought it meant the rating that the user gave the school, not the rating of the comment. That could be made more clear!

Quick update:

I tried doing a “composite” of both the honors/regular visit, but was unsuccesful. Anytime I hit post to the original visit I made with the new info, the system responds with “permission timed out.”

i’d like a couple of art schools to be included in there. considering the amount of posts about school visits in the art forum, i’m sure a couple of posters have some opinions on certain schools.

some schools to consider:

  • art center college of design, pasdena
  • california college of the arts, san francisco
  • maryland institute college of art, baltimore
  • parsons school of design, new york

i’d be nice as well if a couple of canadian schools get included (i know most cc are americans but there are a lot of foreigners as well)…

i went to three school visitis. i’d love to do reviews for the following:

  • york university, toronto
  • humber college, toronto
  • ontario college of art and design, toronto

I’d like to see College of the Atlantic being added. I feel the small colleges are being underrepresented, although it’s also a personal request :stuck_out_tongue:
